Conqs Come From Behind in Miraculous Fashion

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Big play from Kevin Howard and Justice Dixon down the stretch, proves crucial as the Conqs come from 18 down to defeat Pratt, 100-97 and remain undefeated in KJCCC play.

Although Jaylon Wilson of Pratt was able to drop 27 points on Wednesday night, the Conqs spread out their scoring as three players were able to collect at least 20 points including Marquis McCray and Bruce Hodges with 21 each and Justice Dixon with a team-high 23.

On the defensive side of the ball, Dixon was also able to collect four steals on the day, while teammate Hunter Davis grabbed 14 boards.

To begin the game, both teams came out playing at a torrid pace, with both teams trading buckets for the first five minutes of the game. After taking the lead for the fifth time, back-to-back baskets from Davis and a huge three-pointer from Dayton McGroarty quickly pushed the lead to 23-13. The Beavers then responded with a run of their own, outscoring the Conqs14-2 for the next 1:15 to take the lead back, 27-25.

Pratt was eventually able to extend their lead to seven with 7:23 left to play, and continued to push their lead to 12 on a big three-pointer by Wilson with 1:32 left in the half. Back-to-back layups by McGroarty and Dixon cut the lead to seven, but a layup by the Beavers with 10 seconds to play sent the teams into the locker room with Pratt leading, 54-44.

Just as in the first half, both teams traded points to for the first few minutes until back-to-back layups by the Beavers pushed their lead to 65-51. Just as the Conqs began to show signs of a comeback, Pratt knocked down a huge three and then added another layup to extend the lead to 17 points with 12:42 left to play. Both teams traded points once more until the media timeout with 8:59 left to play. The Beavers then seemed to have the game in hand, extending their lead to 18 points with 6:47 left ot play in the game after two free throws, but the Conquistadors had other plans.

On the very next possession, JJ Snead knocked down one of the biggest three-pointers of his young career to get things started for the Conqs. After a turnover by Pratt, Snead tried once more, but this time was unsuccessful, but freshman Kevin Howard grabbed the board and put it right back in to make the score, 93-80 with just over six minutes to play.

After a layup by Pratt pushed the lead back to 15, the Conqs then held the Beavers scoreless for the next 3:38 as they played at an unbelievable pace on both ends of the floor, with Howard, Hodges, McCray and Anderson combining for 10 points to cut the lead to 95-90 with 2:40 to play.

The Conquistadors then gave up a layup, but were not done yet, as McCray, Dixon and Hodges all added layups to bring the game within on point. On the very next possession, Dixon was able to get a steal with 11 seconds on the clock and took it the length of the court, and almost converted an and-one, but instead headed to the free throw line with the Conqs down one. Dixon then very calmly knocked down both free throws with seven seconds left to give Dodge City their first lead of the game since 11:14 left in the first quarter.

Pratt then took a timeout and drew up one final play, but as they were bringing the ball up the court, the Beavers were called for an illegal screen, giving the ball back to the Conqs with just over two seconds left. The Conqs in-bounded the ball to Dixon once more who knocked down to more free throws to push the lead to three with one second left. The Beavers were able to get off one last heave, but it was wide right, giving the Conqs the 100-97 win.

"A great team win for our program," head coach Steve Tucker said. "Our kids believed and kept playing the whole game. They finished the game and made it happen."

The Conqs are now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they travel to Coffeyville Community College at 4 p.m.
