Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, Colo. - After wining their first match of the day over Adams State University to advance to the championship match, the Dodge City Community College volleyball team avenged a tournament opening loss to Lamar Community College by defeating the Lopes in four sets to claim the Colorado Christian JV Invitational tournament championship at the CCU Event Center in Lakewood, Colorado on Saturday, September 24th.
DC3 improved to 13-8 on the year with the pair of victories with a three-set sweep over Adams State JV (25-17, 25-15, 25-14) and a four-set win over Lamar (24-26, 25-21, 31-29, 25-23).
In the first match against Adams State JV, sophomore
Alex Bruey led the team in kills with eight while having a match-high four service aces and fellow sophomore
Sada Smith had eight kills and 11 digs.
Daisy Cheek continued her hot streak by finishing with 16 assists and two service aces while
Tenille Tholen led the Conquistadors with 18 digs.
Knowing that Lamar had already beaten the Conquistadors twice this season, DC3 wanted to make a statement and show that a third shot would be the chance they needed. After dropping a tight first set 24-26, Dodge City swept the next three sets to earn their first tournament championship of the year.
"We struggled with Lamar earlier this year and in the first match of this tournament" said DC3 volleyball coach
Kamri Nehls in a post-game interivew. "It's hard to beat a team three times and we finally figured it out and executed their weaknesses. The entire game was extremely close, but we fought hard and never gave up."
Cheek closed out the tournament by leading the Conquistadors in the match with 21 assists and had 10 digs to complete a double-double while Tholen had 25 digs.
Raquel Valdez had 11 kills to go with a massive seven solo blocks as Smith had 21 digs and 13 kills.
A short turnaround awaits the Conquistadors, who will return to Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference action on Monday, September 26th at home against Pratt. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
