Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - A quick start gave the Dodge City Community College volleyball team a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-21, 25-23) win over Labette before taking a 20-25, 25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 17-15 thriller over Indpendence on the second day of the Dodge City Community College volleyball tournament.
DC3 is now 9-6 on the year, having won three of four matches in their home tournament.
In the first match against Labette, the Conquistadors jumped all over the Cardinals and took a 19-5 lead before eventually taking the first set 25-10. Finding their groove in the second set, DC3 led Labette 20-9 before the Cardinals made a massive comeback that would fall short as the Conqs won 25-21. With a sweep on their mind, a back and forth set broke out in the third with the Conquistadors eventually pulling away for the 25-23 win.
Sophomore
Mariah Watkins led the team with nine kills while
Sada Smith had eight kills, 12 digs, and three service aces. Tenille tholen had 13 digs and two service aces while
Briana Brown added 17 assists.
The afternoon session was a much closer match as the Pirates would take the first set by a score of 25-20. Dodge City would flip the script with a 25-17 set two win before squeaking out a 26-24 set three win with a chance to close out the match in four sets. Indpendence would not allow for the match to end in four sets as the Pirates the set by a score of 25-23 to send the match to a winner-take-all fifth set which the Conqs would take 17-15.
Tholen would add 17 digs in the second match to go along with three service aces while
Sada Smith had a monstrous double-double with 26 digs and 19 kills.
Raquel Valdez had 15 kills with seven solo blocks while Brown led the team with 25 assists and nine digs.
DC3 is back in action on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. when they host the Sterling College JV team at the DC3 Gymnasium.
