DC3 Volleyball Splits on First Day of Home Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, KAN. - A slow start put the Dodge City Community College volleyball team behind early, as the Conquistadors could never recover in a five-set (21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 15-8) defeat to Butler Community College before rebounding to defeat Cedar Valley College 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-19) in the first day of the Dodge City Community College volleyball tournament at Dodge City High School on Friday, September 16th.

DC3 is now 7-6 overall on the season and 2-3 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

After falling behind 8-3 in the first set against Butler, DC3 would slowly work their way back into the set but never could fully recover and eventually dropped the set 21-25. A tight close second set would follow as nether team opened up more than a four point lead at any point in the set, with Dodge City eventually tying the match at one set each with a 25-23 win. After trading sets three and four, a pivotal fifth set awaited the Grizzlies and Conquistadors. The fifth set would go just like the first set with a slow start putting the Conqs in a 12-4 deficit. Butler would keep their foot on the gas pedal and pull away for the 15-8 win to come away with the victory.

Sada Smith had 14 kills in the match to go along with a career-high 28 digs while Briana Brown had a team-high 15 assists. Tenille Tholen added 20 digs and three service aces while Raquel Valdez had 15 kills, four solo blocks, and one service ace.

Match two saw the Conquistadors come out ready to play and it showed as Dodge City jumped out to leads of 7-2, 14-7, and 20-7 before taking the set 20-11. In the second set, DC3 fell behind early before taking the lead for good at 11-10 and never looking back. Following an 8-3 run, DC3 would sustain their lead for the rest of the set and come away with a 25-18 win. Set three was very similar to the second set with both teams keeping pace with each other before a 9-1 run by the Conquistadors gave Dodge City some breathing room and pull away for the 25-19 win to sweep the match.

Brown had 16 assists and 11 digs to come away with a double-double while Smith also recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs.

Dodge City will play two matches again tomorrow starting with a 10 a.m. match against Labette before closing out the tournament against Independence at 2 p.m. Earlier this year at Labette, the Conquistadors downed the Cardinals in four sets.
