DC3 loses lead in ninth inning to Allen, season comes to an end

DC3's Ivan Gonzalez rounds third base to score during the fourth inning of Sunday's game against Allen at Cavalier Field.
Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The 2015 Region VI Tournament champion Dodge City Community College baseball team was three outs away Sunday against Allen of continuing its quest of defending its title and trying to earn back-to-back JUCO World Series appearances.

But things came unraveled in the ninth inning as the Conquistadors' 8-7 lead vanished with seven Red Devil runs in the frame as DC3's season came to an end in a 14-9 loss to Allen in the third-and-deciding game of the Region VI Tournament opening round series at Cavalier Field.

The Red Devils advance to play top-seeded Neosho in the double-elimination portion of the Region VI Tournament on Friday in Wichita while the Conqs' season comes to a close at 41-18.

DC3 broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the seventh when Richard Fullerton hit a two-out, two-run homer that just cleared the left field wall to make it 8-6.

Allen (28-27) answered when Roberto Enriquez led off the eighth with a home run to cut the Conqs' lead to one at 8-7.

The score remained that way until the ninth when the KJCCC leader in saves Carter Hogan entered for DC3.

The Red Devils opened the inning with back-to-back singles and sacrificed those runners to second and third with one out.

After Hogan plunked Gunar Drinnen with a pitch, Caedan Harris grounded out to second base to score the game-tying run and make it 8-8.

With two outs and a base open, the Conqs intentionally walked Enriquez. But Hogan hit Dylan Warner to force in the go-ahead run at 9-8. Another hit batter made it 10-8 when Matthew Perea came in for DC3 and he surrendered a two-run single to give the Red Devils a 12-8 lead.

Allen capped its scoring in the seven-run inning with a two-run single by Torey Jordan Jr. off of Layne Downing to push the Red Devil advantage to 14-8.

While the Conqs scored one in the ninth, it was far from enough as their season came to a close.

DC3 fell behind 4-0 after a first inning that included Allen home runs from Jordan and Torrance Summerlin.

DC3 bounced back with a five-run fourth - highlighted by a two-run single by Frankie Valle and a go-ahead RBI single by Colton Onstott to make it 5-4.

The lead didn't last long, however, as Allen scored two more in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead before the Conqs tied it in the sixth with a single run before a wild final three innings.

Hogan picked up the loss for DC3, going 0.2 innings and giving up six runs on two hits with a walk and three hit batters.

Valle went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Conqs while Fullerton finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Onstott, Ivan Gonzalez and Jason Nichols had two hits apiece as well for DC3 as it outhit Allen 15-13.

Jordan Musser got the win for Allen, going two innings and giving up a run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Jordan finished 3-for-5 for the Red Devils with three RBI while Summerlin also had three RBI and Ben Aslett and Kole McKinnon each had two RBI.
