DC3 splits with Allen in region tourney, season on line Sunday

Colton Onstott is congratulated at home plate by Jason Nichols (6) and Ricky Trammell (25) after one of his two home runs in game one during the Region VI Tournament opening round series at Cavalier Field.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The defending Region VI Tournament champion Dodge City Community College baseball team's season hangs in the balance after splitting two games with Allen on Saturday, winning game one 8-7 and falling in game two 17-9, in the Region VI Tournament opening round best-of-three series.

The Conqs (41-17) and Red Devils (27-27) play that deciding game 1 p.m. Sunday at Cavalier Field with a trip to Wichita and the double-elimination portion of the Region VI Tournament on the line.

DC3 in Saturday's opener trailed 5-2 heading into the sixth inning when the Conqs scored three runs - highlighted by a Colton Onstott two-run homer, his second of the game - to tie it.

The tie didn't last long as in the top of the seventh Allen scored two runs on just one hit to take a 7-5 advantage. However, it could've been worse if not for Layne Downing entering in relief and getting the final two outs of the inning.

It proved crucial as the Conqs loaded the bases with two outs when Colbey Madewell, who homered earlier in the game, smacked a three-run double to give DC3 an 8-7 advantage.

It was enough for Downing as he gave up just one hit over the final two innings to secure the victory for the Conqs. Jay Rawlins got the start for the Conqs, going six innings and giving up five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Madewell finished 2-for-4 for DC3 with a home run, double and four RBI, Onstott was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI while Richard Fulerton was 2-for-3 with a double.

Jake Butterfield got the loss for Allen, going 6.2 innings and giving up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Torrence Summerlin and Cameron Pope each went 2-for-4 for the Red Devils with a home run apiece.

Game two proved to be even more explosive offensively as the game was tied 7-7 heading into the fifth and Allen led 11-9 heading into the eighth before scoring six runs in the inning to pull away for the 17-9 victory.

Jeremy Hidalgo got the loss in relief for the Conqs, going 2.1 innings and giving up three runs on five hits with a strikeout. Matthew Perea got the start, going 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Jake Pederson went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, Jason Nichols was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, Ricky Trammell was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, Frankie Valle was 2-for-4 and Madewell finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Matt Sostarich got the win for Allen, going five innings in relief and giving up two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Roberto Enriquez highlighted the Red Devils' 22-hit attack by hitting for the cycle - going 4-for-7 with six RBI. Kole McKinnon went 4-for-5 while Torey Jordan Jr. was 2-for-6 with a home run and five RBI.
