DC3 pounds out 13 hits, opens Region VI with win over Seward

DC3's Candace Bollig, seen earlier this season, went 3-for-3 in the Conqs' win over Seward on Tuesday in the Region VI Tournament.
Box Score
EL DORADO, Kan. -- What was once a 5-0 lead for the Dodge City Community College softball team over Seward County in the Region VI Tournament opener was sliced to 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning on a Saints three-run homer.

The Conquistadors' lead wasn't threatened long, however, as they put together a five-run bottom of the fifth - highlighted by a Kayla Frazier three-run homer - to put away Seward County in a 10-5 victory Tuesday at East Park.

DC3 (20-21) advances to take on No. 6 Butler 11 a.m. Wednesday while Seward (26-31) hits the field again for the double-elimination event 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Conqs' five-run fifth started on a one-out walk to Candace Bollig and was followed by a Kaylie Schoendaller single to left. Hailey Collins entered to pinch hit and came through with an RBI double to left to push the Conq lead to 6-4.

Heather Amen followed with an RBI single before Frazier blasted a three-run shot to left to make it 10-4 DC3.

That was more than enough for DC3 ace Kim Herron as the freshman went the distance to move to 15-12 on the season. The right-hander gave up five runs (four earned) on 12 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Conqs jumped right on Seward starter Kelly Kearney in the first inning as a Bollig RBI single scored Marina Kelly (who led the inning off with a walk) before Schoendaller ripped a two-run home run to make it 3-0 DC3 in the first.

DC3 added to the lead in the third inning when Amen came through with a two-out, two-run single to push the Conq lead to 5-0.

Amen finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run and two stolen bases while Bollig was 3-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and a stolen base, Schoendaller was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and Herron finished 2-for-4 with a run.

Kearney got the loss for Seward, going 4.1 innings and giving up 10 runs on 10 hits with a strikeout and three walks. Kennedy Brunson went 3-for-4 for the Saints, Hannah Lopez was 2-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI while Brittany Corrales hit a three-run homer as well.
