Box Score 2 LA JUNTA, Colo. -- The Dodge City Community College baseball team rallied in the first game and held off an Otero charge in game two to sweep the Rattlers 4-2 and 9-6 Tuesday on the road.
The victory is the Conquistadors' fifth in a row - the fourth time this season they've put together a win streak of five games or more.
In game one, the Conqs (38-14) trailed 2-0 heading to the sixth inning when
Frankie Valle led off the frame with a single followed by a
Trevor Close single to put runners on first and second.
Jason Nichols made it three hits in a row when he ripped an RBI single to cut the DC3 deficit to 2-1 - the start of a big day for the sophomore as he finished the doubleheader with six RBI.
The Rattlers (20-29) were able to get out of the jam in the sixth with no more damage, but the Conqs got rolling again in the seventh - ignited by a lead-off single by
Ivan Gonzalez.
Jake Pederson followed with a single, and after a
Robert Perea fielder's choice, a Rattler error allowed Pederson to score and tie the game 2-2.
Following a walk to Close, Nichols hit a go-ahead, two-run double to give the Conqs a 4-2 advantage.
Carter Hogan closed it down for DC3 in the seventh for his ninth save of the season.
Cory Royer got the win in relief, going 0.2 innings and giving up a hit while picking up a strikeout.
Charlie Vizcaya got the start, going four innings and giving up a run on five hits with a walk.
Nichols finished 2-for-4 with three RBI while Valle went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs for the Conqs.
In game two the Conqs broke up a scoreless contest with a five-run fifth, highlighted by two-run singles from Nichols and Perea and an RBI double by Trammell to make it 5-0.
The Rattlers cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth before DC3 scored four more in the fifth on a Nichols RBI triple, a
Ricky Trammell RBI single and a two-run double from
Ivan Gonzalez to make it 9-2.
Otero scored four in its half of the fifth, however, to slice the lead back to three before
Hayden Davey and
Dalton Harvey each tossed a scoreless inning for the Conqs to close out the 9-6 win.
Davey got the win, going an inning and giving up a hit while picking up a strikeout while Harvey pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts for the save.
Colbey Madewell went 3-for-4 with a double and run for DC3, Nichols went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and a triple, Trammell was 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and a double while Perea was 2-for-2 with two RBI, a run and two walks.
The Conqs host a key four-game KJCCC series against Seward County starting 1 p.m. Saturday at Cavalier Field. DC3 is a game ahead of the Saints for the fourth and final spot to host a first round best-of-three Region VI Tournament series with this being the final four games of the regular season. DC3 needs to win at least two of the games to secure a home series for the first round of regionals.
