Conqs take two from Pratt, stay in hunt for regional home series

DC3's Robert Perea
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PRATT, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College baseball team got what it needed Saturday to stay in the hunt for a home regional playoff series by taking two from Pratt on the road, 6-4 and 5-1, at Stanion Field.

The victories move the Conquistadors (36-14 overall, 17-11 KJCCC) into fourth place in the conference - a game ahead of Seward (15-11) with the Saints still with two games to play at home Sunday against Barton. The top four teams in the East and West Divisions host a best-of-three series in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament. DC3 and Seward wrap up the regular season against each other with a four-game series starting 1 p.m. Saturday in Dodge City.

The Conqs, who won the final three games against Pratt (19-32, 9-19), capped the series with a gem from freshman Cole Brandon in a 5-1 DC3 victory. The left-hander went the distance, giving up a run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks - throwing 101 pitches. Brandon gave up just one hit (a lead-off single in the ninth) after the Beavers scored their lone run in the third and at one point retired 12 of 13 hitters.

It's Brandon's second nine-inning complete game of the season and moves his record to 2-2.

The Conqs got on the board first in Saturday's second game on an Ivan Gonzalez RBI single before the Beavers tied it in the third inning.

DC3 took the lead for good in the sixth when a run scored on a Pratt error before Robert Perea made it 3-1 with an RBI single. The Conqs added two more in the 8th to make the final 5-1.

The Conqs pounded out 15 hits and six players had multiple hits, led by Ricky Trammell going 3-for-4 with a double and a run. Jason Nichols, Colton Onstott, Colbey Madewell, Perea and Gonzalez had two hits apiece with Gonzalez adding two RBI.

In Saturday's first game, the Conqs trailed 1-0 heading to the third before a Jake Pederson RBI single, Nichols sacrifice fly and an Onstott RBI single gave DC3 a 3-1 advantage.

The Conqs added two more in the fourth on an RBI single by Max Laney and a Pederson RBI double and another in the fifth on a Gonzalez RBI single to make it 6-2 as the Conqs held on for the victory.

Matthew Perea picked up the win, going 4.1 innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Carter Hogan got his ninth save with a perfect seventh inning (only needing four pitches to get three outs) while Cory Royer was solid in relief, going 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and three hits allowed.

DC3 travels to take on Otero Junior College in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday in La Junta, Colorado.
