Conqs lose lead in game one, split doubleheader at Pratt

DC3's Layne Downing, seen earlier this season, picked up the win in game two against Pratt on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PRATT, Kan. -- As the Dodge City Community College baseball team battles for a home series in the first round of the Region VI Tournament, the Conquistadors let game one of a four-game series slip away against Pratt 12-6 before taking game two 15-6 to split a doubleheader Friday at Stanion Field.

With the split, the Conqs (34-14 overall, 15-11 KJCCC) temporarily fall to fifth place in the West Division of the KJCCC, percentage points behind Seward County (14-10 in KJCCC play), which begins a four-game series against Barton on Saturday. The top four teams in the West and East host a best-of-three series in the first round of the regional tournament.

In the first game, the Conqs scored a run in the first (Colton Onstott sac fly), a run in the third (Onstott home run) and two more in the fourth (Max Laney RBI single, Jake Pederson RBI double) to build a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth.

However, Pratt (19-30, 9-17) scored six unearned runs after a DC3 error to lead off the fourth (that runner scored with one out and the rest of the runs scored with two outs) as the Beavers took a 6-4 lead. Pratt added a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to build a 12-4 advantage before the Conqs scored two in the seventh to make the final 12-6.

Jay Rawlins got the loss, going five innings and giving up seven runs (one earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Ricky Trammell went 3-for-4 with a triple, RBI and run for DC3, Pederson was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, Colbey Madewell went 2-for-3 with a double and a run while Onstott finished 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and two runs.

In game two, the Conqs again jumped on top - but by a much larger margin.

Six runs in the first, one in the second and four in the third built an 11-0 Conq lead as DC3 held on for an 15-6 victory.

Layne Downing picked up the win, going 5.2 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Jason Nichols led the Conqs at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a double and three runs. Robert Perea, Richard Fullerton, Laney and Pederson had two hits apiece for DC3 with Fullerton and Pederson adding three RBI each.

DC3 and Pratt conclude the series 2 p.m. Saturday with another doubleheader at Stanion Field. Follow the games by clicking here.
