Conqs struggle at plate, drop final two games of Hutchinson series

DC3's Jake Pederson is called out at home plate trying to score on a wild pitch during the Conqs' loss to Hutchinson in game one Friday at Cavalier Field.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College baseball team either couldn't take advantage of its opportunities (game one) or couldn't create many (game two) as the Conquistadors dropped the final two games of its four-game series to Hutchinson on Friday, 9-3 and 6-2, at Cavalier Field.

DC3 (33-13 overall, 14-10 KJCCC) left 10 on base in the first game before only tallying five hits in game two against the Blue Dragons (31-13, 20-8) as the Conqs dropped three of four to Hutchinson during a series in which the wind was blowing hard straight out to center both days.

"We weren't very good offensively," DC3 coach Phil Stephenson said. "That's about as plain as I can put it. We had a few moments, but not enough of them. We didn't make enough adjustments at the plate. We can't do anything about the elements other than they were hitting in the same elements as us and they were finding ways to square balls up and get them up in the air and out of the ballpark and we were just beating balls into the ground, swinging at balls ankle high and taking fastballs down the middle.

"It was a frustrating day, but we have to put it behind us and get ready for the next outing."

The Conqs, who never led in either game Friday, were tied 1-1 with Hutchinson heading to the second inning of game one when Caden Doga led off the frame with a line drive home run to left field to make it 2-1 as DC3 trailed the rest of the way.

Home runs played a key role in both games for the Blue Dragons as they scored their first six runs via four home runs to take a 6-2 advantage and cruise from there in game one while scoring all six of their runs in game two via four home runs - finishing the doubleheader with eight homers that accounted for 12 of their 15 runs.

Matthew Perea got the loss for DC3 in game one, going five innings and giving up seven runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Jake Pederson went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Conqs, Colton Onstott was 2-for-3 while Ivan Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with a home run.

Nolan Hoffman got the win for Hutchinson, going six innings and giving up three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and five walks.

Michael Helman paced the Blue Dragons at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Shane Cooper was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI as well for Hutchinson.

In game two, DC3 fell behind 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth on solo home runs from Doga and Cole Donaldson before back-to-back doubles by Onstott and Jason Nichols cut the Conq deficit to 2-1.

However, that would be two of the five hits DC3 mustered in the second game as two more home runs - with a three-run shot by Doga in the fifth (his fifth homer of the series and 25th on the season) being the big blow - accounted for four more runs for the Blue Dragons and the Conqs fell 6-2.

Cole Brandon got the loss, going five innings and giving up five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Onstott went 2-for-4 with a run for DC3 while Gonzalez and Nichols had the Conqs' two RBI.

Kyle Cantu picked up the win in relief (starter Michael Helman went only four innings), going three innings and giving up a run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Doga went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI for the Blue Dragons while Cooper finished 4-for-5 (finishing the day 7-for-9).

The Conqs return to action April 23 when they hit the road to start at four-game series against Pratt.
