Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College baseball team wanted to accomplish three things Tuesday against Hesston College - get two wins, get key reserves at-bats and get pitchers who haven't got a lot of work lately into game situations.
DC3 accomplished all those things in 9-5 and 7-4 victories over the Larks at Cavalier Field.
"We pitched it OK ... and tried to give some other guys some at-bats who usually don't get them," DC3 coach
Phil Stephenson said. "We were hoping to come out and square a bunch of balls up - sometimes we did and sometimes we didn't. We wanted to get some (pitchers) some work who haven't been getting it and a few guys out of our bullpen and we did that. It's two Ws - you take them and you walk away with it."
In game one, the Conquistadors (32-10) got on the board first with a bang as
Frankie Valle blasted a grand slam as part of a five-run second inning.
Hesston (12-30) bounced back with three in the third before
Jeremy Hidalgo entered in relief and ended the rally by inducing a double play to keep the score at 5-3 DC3.
A wild pitch allowed a Conq to score in the fourth before DC3 scored three more in the fifth, highlighted by a
Jason Nichols RBI single, to push the lead to 9-3 as the Conqs held on for the four-run victory.
Hidalgo gets the win in relief, going 2.2 innings and giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.
Nichols paced the DC3 bats, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run while
Colton Onstott and
Richard Fullerton also had RBIs in the game along with Valle's grand slam.
In game two, DC3 scored runs in each of the first four innings to build a 7-1 advantage and held on for the 7-4 victory.
Charlie Vizcaya picked up the win, going 4.1 innings and giving up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Ivan Gonzalez led DC3 at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run.
Trevor Close was 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and run while
Robert Perea went 2-for-3.
The Conqs are scheduled to play first-place Hutchinson 1 p.m. Saturday at home to start a key KJCCC four-game series, but with inclement weather forecasted for the weekend - the series may be moved up. Follow us on Twitter at
