Box Score 2 GARDEN CITY, Kan. -- The mood was somber at best when the Dodge City Community College baseball team collected its belongings and left the first base dugout at Williams Stadium Saturday night after dropping two games to Garden City.
But a great part about baseball is a chance for redemption is often just around the corner - and the Conquistadors took full advantage of that Sunday.
A strong performance by DC3 left-hander
Matthew Perea in game one was followed by gem from fellow lefty
Cole Brandon in game two as the Conquistadors took two from the Broncbusters, 4-3 and 6-0, Sunday afternoon in Garden City.
The wins broke a 14-game losing streak for DC3 (30-10, 13-7) in Garden City (31-11, 16-8) with the Conqs' last win at Williams Stadium coming in 2008.
The wins also keep the Conqs in the mix for the KJCCC West Division title. DC3 is two games back of first-place Hutchinson (which it hosts next week) and a game back of both Colby and Garden City.
In Sunday's first game, the Conqs fell behind 1-0 after one before scoring a pair of runs on a Garden City error and a
Colbey Madewell RBI single to make it 2-1 DC3.
The Conqs added to the lead in the fourth when
Frankie Valle scored on a wild pitch and
Max Laney scored on another Broncbuster error (they had four in the game) on a ball hit by
Ricky Trammell to make it 4-1.
Perea held Garden City hitless after the first inning until the sixth when the Broncbusters were able to score twice and cut the Conquistador lead to 4-3.
Garden City looked primed to at least tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and final inning when Perea walked Alex Nielson on four pitches to start the inning and Nielson was sacrificed to second by Aeneas Roberson.
With Perea just over the 100-pitch mark, DC3 went to closer
Carter Hogan and the 6-foot-4 freshman, after a walk, shut the Broncbusters down for his eighth save of the season.
Perea got the win, going 6.1 innings and giving up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks to improve to 8-1 on the season.
Valle went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs for the Conqs while
Colton Onstott was 2-for-4.
Tyler Franek got the loss, going six innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Brooks Benson led Garden City at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
In game two it was all about Brandon as the freshman at one point retired 10 straight during his seven-hit shutout while striking out two and walking none - finishing with exactly 100 pitches to pick up his first win of the season.
Brandon got all the support he needed in the third inning when Valle hit an RBI single to give the Conqs a 1-0 lead. But DC3 stretched out the lead in the fifth when an Onstott RBI double,
Jake Pederson RBI single, Valle RBI groundout and
Ivan Gonzalez RBI double gave the Conqs a 5-0 lead on the Broncbusters.
Onstott finished game two 4-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs while Laney,
Richard Fullerton, Gonzalez and Madewell had two hits apiece for the Conqs as they finished with 16 hits.
DC3 handed Brendan Peitsmeyer his first loss of the season (7-1) as he went 7.1 innings and gave up six runs on 14 hits with a strikeout and two walks.
Benson and Jesse Gonzalez had two hits apiece for Garden City in game two.
The Conqs host first-place Hutchinson for a four-game series next weekend with the first game starting 1 p.m. Saturday at Cavalier Field.
Notes: This is the second time this season DC3 entered a series playing the first-place team in the KJCCC and knocked them off the top spot (and gets its third chance to do so against Hutchinson starting Saturday). ...
Max Laney has now reached base in 38 of the Conqs' 40 games this season. ...
Colton Onstott went 6-for-9 on Sunday after going 1-for-7 on Saturday. ...
Cole Brandon's nine-inning, complete game was by far his longest outing of the season. The previous long was 6.1 innings in a loss to Cloud County (gave up two earned runs). ... Since giving up a season-high five runs against Colby, Brandon in his last four starts has a 2.07 ERA with 11 strikeouts, 26 hits allowed and four walks in 26 innings pitched.
