Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Though neither comeback was large or had the drama of a walk off, the Dodge City Community College softball team rallied twice against Frank Phillips College to sweep the Lady Plainsmen, 4-3 and 10-5, on Wednesday at Legends Park.
The Conquistadors (10-8), who have won four of their last five contests, trailed in the first game 3-0 and in the second game 5-4 before coming back for the victories.
"
We are battling," DC3 coach Howie Smith said. "We don't give up and we are hanging in there. We don't get too frustrated out there. ... It's a business type of group and we found a way to get two."
In the first game the Conqs fell behind in the top of the first 3-0 after Frank Phillips' Jaelene Solano hit a three-run home run to left. But it turned out to be only one of three hits the Lady Plainsmen (9-15) got off of DC3 starter
Kim Herron as the freshman did her best to keep the Conqs in the game and allow the rally to happen.
DC3 got a run back in the second on a
Kaylie Schoendaller RBI double and another in the third on a
Baylee Rial RBI single to cut the its deficit to 3-2.
The score remained that way until the fifth when the speedy
Heather Amen hit a triple to right center to lead off the inning and was driven home by
Candace Bollig to tie the game.
Bollig stole second before and advanced to third on a Rial bunt single.
Taylor Menard drove Bollig home with a sacrifice fly to center to give DC3 the 4-3 lead.
It was enough for Herron, who retired six of the final seven hitters with only a walk in between to finish the complete-game victory - allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with a season-high seven strikeouts to move her record to 6-4.
Bollig went 3-for-3 in the first game with an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases while Rial was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
Sabrina Branch got the loss in game one for the Lady Plainsmen, going the distance and giving up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.Â
Solano went 2-for-2 with the home run and three RBI.In the second game it was the Conqs jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning, highlighted by a
Kayla Frazier two-run home run.
But Frank Phillips scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 5-4 lead into the fifth.
The Conqs took advantage of a Frank Phillips error in the fifth to score and tie the game before exploding for five runs in the sixth, including four consecutive run-scoring hits by Bollig, Rial, Menard and Marina Kelly to balloon the lead to 10-5.Lindsey Lemmon retired the Lady Plainsmen in order in the seventh to pick up the win to move to 3-2 on the year. She went the distance, giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits (all singles) with four strikeouts and no walks.
Smith was impressed with how both of his pitchers battled through adversity Wednesday.
"
I thought both of our kids, especially Kim, got stronger as the game went on," Smith said. "For Lindsey there was an inning where Frank Phillips took the lead and she really kept her composure. ... I was proud of how both of those kids reacted after a little bit of misfortune."Bollig, Rial, Kelly,
Taryn Garza and Frazier each had two hits apiece and at least one RBI in the game-two win.
Cheyenne Housh got the loss for Frank Phillips, going 5.2 innings and giving up 10 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits with two strikeouts. Kassandra Soliz went 3-for-4 for the Lady Plainsmen with an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.
