Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Dodge City Community College softball coach
Howie Smith told his players after recent offensive struggles to be more aggressive at the plate, but that backfired a bit during a game-one loss to Clarendon College on Tuesday, 2-0.
But the Conquistadors dialed back their aggressiveness in game two and a walk-off RBI double by
Candace Bollig in the eighth inning secured a 7-6 victory and a split with the Bulldogs at Legends Park.
Clarendon pitcher Ryata Daniel handcuffed the Conquistadors (8-8) on numerous occasions in the first game with her screwball - most of the time early in the count (she threw only 66 pitches in seven innings) as the Conqs were blanked in the first game despite a strong effort in the circle from
Kim Herron (five innings) and
Lindsey Lemmon (two innings).
DC3 made adjustments in game two against Daniel - mainly becoming more patient. This combined with timely hitting led to the Conquistadors finding a way to score off of the sophomore.
"We were too overanxious today," Smith said. "Half of the first pitches we swung at probably weren't strikes. We had talked about being more aggressive, but we got too aggressive. ... But we were able to make an adjustment and salvage the split."
The key blow in game two came on a pair of two-out, two-run singles by
Taylor Menard and
Marina Kelly to make it 4-0 in the second inning.
Clarendon (13-12) scratched its way back into the game and a solo home run in the fourth inning tied it 4-4.
The Bulldogs took a 5-4 lead before an RBI double by Kelly tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Conqs took a brief 6-5 lead before the game went into extra innings tied 6-6 after Clarendon scored in the top of the 7th.
With the international tiebreaker rule in play (where a runner starts the inning on second base), Bollig led off the eighth with a game-ending RBI double to score
Heather Amen and give the Conqs the win.
Bollig finished 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and was hit by two pitches. Menard went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Kelly was 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Herron got the win in relief, going 4.1 innings and giving up an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
In the first game, Herron got the loss - going five innings and giving up a run on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Kayla Frazier was the lone DC3 player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
DC3 will have a short turnaround as it hosts Frank Phillips 2 p.m. Wednesday at Legends Park.
