Box Score 2 COLBY, Kan. — As the Dodge City Community College baseball team entered the sixth inning of game two Sunday down 6-0 to Colby, to say the Conquistador bats were struggling in the four-game series might be putting it lightly.
Through the first 26 innings of the series, DC3 managed just two runs on 15 hits (one for extra bases) while being outscored 30-2 in three losses to the Trojans and the first five innings of the series finale.
But the Conq bats suddenly came to life as a six-run sixth tied the game before single runs in the seventh and ninth put DC3 past Colby 8-7 after falling 6-1 earlier Sunday.
In game two, a
Jake Pederson lead-off single followed by a
Richard Fullerton RBI double got the Conqs on the board at 6-1 in the sixth inning.
Ivan Gonzalez ripped an RBI single before a two-run double by
Max Laney made it 6-4.
Andres Acuna lined a two-out RBI single to right field to cut the deficit to one before a
Ricky Trammell RBI double tied the game 6-6.
The Conqs (11-4 overall, 1-3 KJCCC) took a 7-6 lead in the seventh when Fullerton led off the the inning with a walk, was sacrificed to second by
Colbey Madewell, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
Another run in the ninth made it 8-6 - and it turned out to be crucial as Colby's Marvin Malone hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth before
Carter Hogan came in for his fifth save of the season by recording the final two outs, including a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the game.
A big key in the win was the relief performance by DC3's
Jeremy Hidalgo. The sidearmer went 4.1 innings and allowed a run on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks to pick up the win.
Cole Brandon got the start for the Conqs and went four innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Fullerton was the lone Conquistador with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
As for game one, Colby scored three runs in the third inning and it was more than enough for Trojan starter Hunter Ducorbier. He went the distance and gave up a run on four hits with nine strikeouts and a walk.
DC3's lone run was a fourth-inning home run by
Colton Onstott.
Jay Rawlins got the loss, going the distance and giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Conqs return home to play a non-KJCCC game against NOC-Tonkawa 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cavalier Field.
