Conquistadors start KJCCC play on rough note, drop two at Colby

DC3's Ricky Trammell, seen earlier this season, had three of the Conqs' nine hits Saturday at Colby.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLBY, Kan. — The Dodge City Community College baseball team struggled in all facets in its KJCCC-opening doubleheader Saturday as the Conquistadors scored one run, allowed 19 and committed five errors in 6-0 and 13-1 losses to Colby on the road.

DC3 (10-3 overall, 0-2 KJCCC) was shut down in game one by Jeremy Gwinn as the Trojan right-hander scattered seven hits (all singles) with nine strikeouts and one walk in the shutout.

Colby (12-4, 2-0) got all the offense it needed with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Ben Dalke to make it 3-0.

Layne Downing picked up the loss for DC3, going 3.2 innings and giving up six runs on 10 hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Ricky Trammell and Colbey Madewell paced the Conqs at the plate, each going 2-for-3 to combine for four of DC3's seven hits.

The hits were even harder to find in game two for the Conqs as they mustered just two and scored its first run of the doubleheader on a Trammell RBI single in the seventh and final inning to make it 13-1.

Colby scored runs in each of the first five innings to build a 13-0 advantage - more than enough for Nicholas Priola. The left-hander went six innings and gave up just one hit with nine strikeouts and seven walks.

Matthew Perea got the loss for DC3, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up five runs on seven hits with a strikeout and four walks.

Outside of Trammell's seventh-inning RBI single, only Max Laney had a hit in the contest.

DC3 looks to turn things around 1 p.m. Sunday when it completes its four-game series with the Trojans in Colby. Jay Rawlins and Cole Brandon are the expected DC3 starters in the doubleheader.
