Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- For much of the first three games of its series against Barton, Dodge City Community College was coming through routinely in run-scoring situations.
In the fourth game, however, the Conquistadors failed multiple times in opportunities to score and trailed 2-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth Saturday.
But DC3 got a little help in the frame as a pair of Barton errors, a walk and an RBI single tied the game before a walk-off balk ended it for a 3-2 Conq victory to complete the four-game sweep of the previously first-place Cougars at Cavalier Field.
DC3 (23-8 overall, 11-5 KJCCC) got a gift to start the inning when
Colton Onstott grounded the ball to second base and the Cougars (18-11, 8-4) threw the ball away to put Onstott on second.
Tim Wakefield followed by drawing a walk from Barton reliever Ben Wright before the Cougars misplayed a bunt by
Jake Pederson to load the bases (
Cory Royer entered to pinch run for Wakefield at second after the Pederson bunt).
Barton appeared it may escape as Wright got DC3's
Frankie Valle to strike out and
Ivan Gonzalez to pop out before the Conqs'
Max Laney hit an infield single in the hole between second and third to score Onstott and tie the game, 2-2.
"
I saw the change-up well, I just hit it off the end of the bat," Laney said. "I was honestly pretty lucky. We needed a break and we got one. There were a couple of really good at-bats before me that even got me into that situation."Wright had
Colbey Madewell down 0-2 with two outs when Wright was looking in for the sign. Suddenly the ball slipped out of his grasp and hit the mound for balk to send the pinch runner Royer home and give DC3 a 3-2 victory.
"
They gave that one to us," DC3 coach Phil Stephenson said. "There is no other way to say it. We left a lot of opportunities out there (during the game). ... They made a couple of errors. I feel bad for the kid (who balked). He was just standing on the rubber fiddling with the ball and he drops it."Dalton Harvey picked up the win in relief for DC3, going four innings and giving up a run on two hits with three strikeouts. He entered in relief of starter
Cole Brandon, who went five innings and gave up a run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Ricky Trammell went 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace DC3 at the plate.
Wright got the loss for Barton, going 0.2 innings and giving up two runs (none earned) on two hits with a strikeout and a walk. Cody Brewer started for the Cougars, going eight innings and giving up a run on four hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
Cole Henley paced Barton at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
In the first game it was left-hander
Matthew Perea dealing for the Conqs as the New Mexico State commit tossed a complete game and gave up an unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks to improve to 6-1 on the season.
DC3 trailed 1-0 heading to the fifth inning before Trammell and Onstott each hit RBI singles and Madewell added a sac fly to give the Conqs a 3-1 lead they held on to for the win.
"Matt was good in the first game and we just figured out a way to get some runs and take a lead," Stephenson said. "The rest was him and he was really good and kept them at bay."
Laney went 2-for-2 with a run in the first game to lead the Conqs.
Mason Hiser got the loss for Barton, going the distance and giving up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Dayton Pomeroy and Henley had two hits apiece to account for all four of the Cougars' hits.
With the sweep, DC3 moves a game back of first place Hutchinson (12-4 in KJCCC play) in the conference - tied with Garden City for third and percentage points behind second-place Colby (10-4). Barton drops from first to fifth place in the KJCCC.
"It's tough to win four games in this league and sweep somebody, especially with somebody who can play - and they can play," Stephenson said. "I'm thrilled with it because it puts us back into the race."
DC3 travels to take on Brown Mackie on Tuesday and won't play another KJCCC series until it travels to take on Garden City April 9.
