Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- As soon as Dodge City Community College's
Max Laney laid down a bunt on the first base side, pinch runner
Cory Royer sprinted toward home with the Conquistadors and first-place Barton tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.
Barton pitcher Taylor Langston made a diving play to his left to stop the ball, spun around and fired home from the ground.
However, as the Barton catcher caught the ball and went in to make the tag, Royer's slide popped the ball loose and completed the Conqs' seventh-inning rally for a 4-3 victory Friday afternoon at Cavalier Field. DC3 used that momentum to take game two 10-4 and sweep a doubleheader from a Cougar squad that was previously undefeated in KJCCC play and had gone 16-2 in its last 18 contests.
With Laney coming up to the plate and the game on the line in the first contest, DC3 coach
Phil Stephenson said he was confident the sophomore could get it done.
"I wasn't going to wait around," Stephenson said. "I know that Max is probably our best bunter and that pitcher made a heck of a play to somehow field it, throw it home and Cory's slide got there right at the right time. ... I was happy with the way we battled."
DC3 (21-8 overall, 9-5 KJCCC) was able to put itself in that position thanks to
Jake Pederson leading off the seventh with a home run to right field to tie the game 3-3 - his second home run of the season.
Robert Perea followed with a walk (and Royer came in to run) before a groundout to second by
Frankie Valle advanced Royer to second and an infield single from
Ivan Gonzalez put runners on the corners to set up Laney's walk-off bunt..
Jay Rawlins overcame being drilled with a line drive to his left (and pitching) forearm in the third inning to go the distance for DC3, giving up three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and a walk to move to 5-1. It was his KJCCC-leading fourth complete game of the season.
"You got to give a lot of credit to
Jay Rawlins because he got hit on his left forearm and he continued to battle," Stephenson said. "He stayed away from the big innings. That was a big part of it."
The Conqs had nine hits from eight players with Laney the lone DC3 player to finishing with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI.
Langston got the loss for Barton (18-9, 8-2), going 0.1 innings and giving up two runs on three hits in relief. Dayton Pomeroy led the Cougars at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
DC3 seemed to use the momentum built from its come-from-behind victory in game one to jump out to a 10-2 lead after four innings in game two and cruise to the 10-4 victory.
A six-run second inning put DC3 in control after falling behind 1-0 in the top half of the inning. After a Pederson sac fly tied it, Gonzalez put the Conqs ahead with a two-run triple to make it 3-1.
Colbey Madewell added a two-run triple of his own later in the inning before an RBI groundout by
Jason Nichols gave DC3 a 6-1 lead.
Barton got a run back in the third before a run in the third and three more in the fourth (highlighted by a Pederson two-run single) put the Conqs up 10-2.
It was enough for DC3 starter
Layne Downing as the sophomore went six innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and a walk to move to 5-1 on the season.
"Layne battled," Stephenson said. "He wasn't sharp today, but he got through six innings. Same with
Hayden Davey in those final three innings."
Davey went the final three innings, giving up a run on four hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
Ricky Trammell went 3-for-4 for DC3 with an RBI and a run, Valle was 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run, Perea was 2-for-3 with two runs, Colton Onstott was 2-for-5 with two runs and Pederson finished 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Austin Taylor got the loss for Barton, going two innings and giving up six runs on six hits with a strikeout and three walks. Michael Sinks was 3-for-5 at the plate for the Cougars, Ryan McClure was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI while Cole Henley and Drake Bliss also added two hits apiece.
The teams conclude their four-game series 1 p.m. Saturday at Cavalier Field with another doubleheader. Matthew Perea (5-1, 3.55 ERA) is scheduled to get the start in the first game for DC3 while Cole Brandon (0-1, 5.74 ERA) is scheduled to start game two.
