Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The undefeated Dodge City Community College baseball team held a comfortable 7-3 lead in game two Wednesday in the top of the fifth against Otero Junior College - and it appeared the Conquistadors were going to cruise into KJCCC play Saturday with a perfect 11-0 mark.
However, a storm that brought gusty winds and sprinkles of rain rushed through Cavalier Field that inning - and appeared to take DC3's momentum with it.
The Conqs surrendered three runs in the fifth, six more in the sixth and another in the seventh as DC3 suffered its first loss of the season 15-7 after taking game one 7-5 against the Rattlers.
DC3 (10-1) allowed runs on an RBI single, error and wild pitch in the fifth to see its 7-3 lead shrink to 7-6 heading to the sixth inning.
Otero's (11-4) top of the seventh started well enough for the Conqs as DC3 reliever
Charlie Vizcaya got the first two hitters of the inning out.
But a Will Hamilton single followed by an Evan Maecker triple tied the game, 7-7. Three pitches into the next hitter, a DC3 passed ball allowed Maecker to score and give Otero an 8-7 advantage.
From there the Rattlers scored four more runs to take a 14-7 advantage and the Conqs never threatened again.
"This is what happens when you let a team hang around," DC3 coach
Phil Stephenson said. "We had our chances to extend the lead. ... We pitched behind in the count a lot today and it came back to finally haunt us. Those things happen every once in awhile. That's baseball. But what was more discouraging to me was that defensively we were really bad in game two. Some of that is just having freshmen out there and having a couple of them not being guys that have played every day. We'll fix those things though. That's what these games are for."
Vizcaya picked up the loss in game two, going 0.2 innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Richard Fullerton paced the Conqs at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. That included a two-run home run in the first inning that tied the game 3-3.
Talon Schaller was 2-for-4 with two RBI for DC3 while
Max Laney went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
In game one, the Conqs scored three runs in the third (on a three-run double by Laney) and four runs in the fourth (highlighted by a two-run home run by
Jason Nichols) to build a 7-1 advantage and hold on for a 7-5 victory after Otero scored four runs in the seventh.
Jay Rawlins got the start in game one and was dominant, giving up a lone single while striking out five and walking none in three innings of work.
Carter Hogan entered in the seventh to pick up the save, going 0.2 innings with a strikeout and a walk.
Nichols finished 2-for-3 with the home run, two RBI and two runs,
Colton Onstott was 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs while
Frankie Valle was also 2-for-4 with a run.
The Conqs begin KJCCC play on the road Saturday when they travel to take on Colby. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
