Box Score 2 EL DORADO, Kan. - Dodge City's
Frankie Valle would be the first to acknowledge his recent struggles as one of the mainstays of last season's Region VI Tournament championship team had gone 2-for-19 since March 2.
But the sophomore came up with his biggest hit of the season Saturday as he clubbed a go-ahead solo home run to lead off the ninth to give the Conquistadors a 6-5 lead over Butler they held on to to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Grizzlies at McDonald Stadium (the Conqs won game one, 5-1).
For Valle it was his second home run of the game as his solo home run to lead off the seventh inning ignited a three-run frame - capped by a
Jason Nichols two-run double to make it 5-4 Dodge City (17-6, 6-4).
Butler (10-13, 0-6) rallied in the eighth inning to tie the game on a single, sac bunt, wild pitch and fielder's choice before Valle led off the ninth inning with the opposite field blast to make it 6-5.
Things got interesting in the ninth, however, as reliever
Dalton Harvey hit the lead-off hitter - and after a sac bunt - hit the next batter to put runners on first and second.
That's when
Carter Hogan came in, but a passed ball allowed the runners to move up to second and third with only one out. But Hogan struck out the next hitter looking before getting the final Grizzlies batter to ground out to first base to end the game.
Harvey got the win to move to 2-0, going 2.1 innings and giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk. Hogan picked up his KJCCC-leading eighth save.
Layne Downing got the start, going six innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
To go along with Valle going 2-for-4 with two home runs, Nichols finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI as well while
Colbey Madewell also had two RBI on a double in the fourth inning.
Travis Hennessy picked up the loss for Butler, going an inning and giving up a run on one hit (the Valle home run in the ninth). Garret Glass led the Grizzlies at the plate in game one, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI while Grant Ware was 2-for-3 with two doubles.
In the first game, Butler had no answer for DC3 starter
Jay Rawlins as the left-hander went the distance and gave up a run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks in the 5-1 victory. The sophomore is now 4-1 on the season with three complete games.
A Nichols sacrifice fly in the first gave DC3 a 1-0 lead, a Valle triple led to a Madewell squeeze bunt to make it 2-0 in the third, a
Colton Onstott two-run single in the sixth made it 4-0 and a Laney squeeze bunt in the seventh scored
Jake Pederson to make the final 5-1.
Nichols finished 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run and Madewell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
Corbin Osburn picked up the loss for Butler, going six innings and giving up four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Josh Rogers went 2-for-2 with an RBI to pick up half of the Grizzlies' hits.
The two teams play another doubleheader in El Dorado starting 1 p.m. Sunday.
