Conquistadors rally in game 1, hold off late Cloud Co. charge in game 2

DC3 catcher Colton Onstott hit a home run in each game Saturday against Cloud County and finished the doubleheader 5-for-8 with eight RBI.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Clutch hitting from the Dodge City Community College baseball team in game one aided a come-from-behind victory while the Conquistadors held off a late Cloud County rally in a wild game two during a doubleheader sweep of the Thunderbirds, 7-4 and 15-14, Saturday at Cavalier Field.

The Conquistadors (14-5 overall, 3-3 KJCCC) trailed 4-2 in game one against Cloud County (2-17, 0-6) in the fifth inning before a two-out, two-run home run to left by Colbey Madewell tied the game. In the next inning, Jason Nichols hit a go-ahead RBI single after Max Laney had walked and stole second base before Colton Onstott followed with deep two-run home run to right to make it 7-4.

Jay Rawlins did the rest as the sophomore tossed his second complete game of the season, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Madewell paced the Conqs in the first game, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.

DC3 struggled early hitting with runners on as the Conqs left the bases loaded in each of the first three innings while getting only one run.

"We didn't come out the way I thought we might swinging the bat," DC3 coach Phil Stephenson said. "We struck out a lot and then we left nine on in the first three innings because (John Badgett) was walking a lot of people. We finally found a way to do it and Colbey came up with that big hit for us. ... We were able to get to their bullpen and they made a few mistakes and we took advantage of them. Plus Jay pitched a whale of a game for us."

Brandon Mitchell got the loss for Cloud County in relief, going 1.1 innings and giving up three runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. The T-Birds' starter Badgett went 4.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and six walks.

Jake Wells led Cloud County at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

In the second game, DC3 scored 11 runs in the first three innings to take an 11-4 lead - highlighted by a five-run third that included a two-run, ground-rule double by Nichols and a two-run single by Onstott.

The T-Birds didn't go away, however, as they scored five runs in the fifth to cut the Conq lead to 11-9. The score remained that way until the seventh when DC3 added four more runs - capped by a two-run home run by Onstott, his second homer of the doubleheader and third on the season - to increase the lead 15-9.

DC3 needed every one of those runs as Cloud County scored five in the ninth before Carter Hogan got Jacob Grady, who had already homered twice in the game, to ground out to short to end the game.

Layne Downing picked up the win, going five innings and giving up nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Dalton Harvey was stellar in relief for the Conqs - pitching three scoreless innings and giving up just one hit with three strikeouts and a walk.

Nichols and Onstott paced the DC3 offense with Nichols going 4-for-5 with six RBI, three runs and a double while Onstott was also 4-for-5 with six RBI, a home run and a double.

"We jumped up on them in game two, they nearly tied it up and then we jumped on them again," Stephenson said. "It was just one of those games where Layne wasn't very sharp. ... Harvey was awesome in his three innings, but we got to come out and close it. ...

"The bottom line is we won two games. It wasn't pretty at times, but it's what we wanted to achieve today. Now we have to come back tomorrow and find a way to do again."

John Stiger got the loss for Cloud County, going two innings and giving up six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Grady went 2-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs while Wells was 3-for-6 with an RBI.

The two teams meet again for a doubleheader 1 p.m. Sunday at Cavalier Field to close out the four-game series.
