Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College baseball team overcame an anxious start in game one and swept a doubleheader from Brown Mackie College, 4-1 and 18-0, on a sunny, but windy, Friday afternoon at Cavalier Field to stay undefeated on the season.
The Conquistadors (9-0) in game one had a hard time figuring out Brown Mackie starter Ryan Christian as many of the DC3 hitters were out in front and pulling ground balls.
"We weren't very good in the first game, but I thought their guy did a good job of mixing pitches and keeping us off balance," DC3 coach
Phil Stephenson said. "We kept beating the ball into the ground, which we want to stay on top, but you got to stay inside and square it up and not roll over on it and we did that quite a bit. "
With the score tied 1-1 heading into the fifth inning, a pair of Lion (0-13) errors with a sacrifice bunt in between gave DC3 a 2-1 lead.
Frankie Valle made it 3-1 with an RBI single.
An
Ivan Gonzalez RBI single in the sixth tacked on an insurance run for the Conqs - more than enough for the DC3 pitching staff.
Layne Downing pitched the first five innings and gave up a run on four hits with six strikeouts to move to 3-0 on the season.
Charlie Vizcaya pitched a scoreless sixth while
Carter Hogan picked up his third save of the season with a perfect seventh inning.
Gonzalez finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run to lead the Conqs in game one.
In the second game, DC3 put up seven runs in the second inning and followed it up with an 11-run fourth inning that included home runs from pinch-hitter
Trevor Close and
Richard Fullerton to run-rule the Lions 18-0.
"I think we caught up with their lack of pitching depth there in the last inning," Stephenson said. "They had trouble locating it a bit, and when they did, it was over the middle and we hammered it pretty good. I was happy to see some guys take advantage of getting some at-bats today."
Fullerton went 3-for-3 in game two with three RBI while six other DC3 hitters had one hit apiece. The Conqs took advantage of three Brown Mackie errors, nine walks and two hit batters to score 18 runs on just nine hits.
Matthew Perea picked up his third win of the season, going four innings and giving up no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Garrett Hammond pitched a scoreless fifth with three strikeouts. DC3 pitchers struck out 19 Lions and walked just two in 12 innings of work Friday.
"Layne had one inning where a couple of balls were hit hard, but that's going to happen," Stephenson said. "You aren't going to make a perfect pitch every time. He was able to minimize and only give up the one run. Matt had inning where he couldn't command it ... but he pitched his way out of it. Sometimes you got to find a way to put up a zero and Matt did that."
Next up for DC3 is a home doubleheader against Otero Junior College 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cavalier Field.
