Box Score HOBBS, N.M. -- Through the first three games of the young 2016 season, the Dodge City Community College baseball team had struck early in games and led throughout, scoring 11 first-inning runs so far this season.
On Saturday, it was late in the game when the Conqs got their timely hits as they came from behind for the victory in game one and won in extra innings in game two to sweep the doubleheader from New Mexico Military Institute, 9-3 and 6-5, at Ray Birmingham Thunderbird Field on the campus of New Mexico Junior College.
In game one, the Conquistadors (5-0) trailed 3-2 heading into the sixth inning before a four-run inning highlighted by a go-ahead RBI double from
Colton Onstott and a two-run single by
Jake Pederson made it 6-3 DC3.
The Conqs added three more in the seventh to secure the victory over the Broncos (3-8).
Matthew Perea got the win to move to 2-0 on the season. The New Mexico State-signee went five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.
Jeremy Hidalgo tossed a scoreless final two innings to secure the victory for the Conqs.
Jason Nichols was a double short of the cycle in game one, going 3-for-3 with a home run, triple, RBI and four runs.
Andres Acuna was also 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs and Onstott was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
In game two, the Conqs trailed 3-2 after three innings before a walk to
Ivan Gonzalez followed by a
Max Laney double led to Gonzalez scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game 3-3.
DC3 took the lead 5-3 on a two-run error by NMMI's center fielder in the fourth inning, but the Broncos scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to send the contest to extra innings.
In the eighth, Laney drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a
Jake Pederson single. That's when sophomore
Frankie Valle stepped up and hit a clutch run-scoring single to give the Conqs a 6-5 lead.
Charlie Viscaya did the rest, shutting down NMMI in the eighth to secure the win. The freshman left-hander picked up the win, going 1.1 innings and giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout.
Cole Brandon got the start for the Conqs, going 5.2 innings and giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Nichols went 2-for-4 in game two with a triple, Pederson was 2-for-4 while Onstott added two more RBI.
DC3 completes the four-game series with the Broncos 1 p.m. (CST) Sunday.
