Box Score 2 Looking to finish the regular season strong and position themselves for the postseason, the Dodge City baseball team traveled to Colby on Wednesday for a doubleheader and picked up a pair of victories.
The Conquistadors earned 8-5 and 11-7 wins over Colby, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Trojans and improving to 24-27 on the season and 13-17 in KJCCC action.
Conqs will wrap up the regular season on Friday, May 1st, at home against Colby with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – Won 8-5 at Colby
The series opener proved to be a back-and-forth affair, with the lead changing hands five different times. The first lead on the day belonged to the Conqs as
Ben Longoria drove in a run in the first on an RBI single, but Colby responded in the bottom of the first with two runs to grab the lead. Colby led 3-1 entering the fourth, but the Conqs jumped back in front in the fourth inning, scoring with an RBI triple from
Hunter Morgan, and then went up 4-3 with a two-run home run by
Cameron Stukenborg. Colby quickly answered again, plating two runs in the bottom of the fourth to swing back in front at 5-4. Conqs tied the game in the fifth with another RBI single by Longoria and then in the sixth regained the lead for good scoring three including a two-run homer by
Jordi Guerrero.
Cameron Stewart shut down the Trojans of Colby, keeping them off the scoreboard over the final three innings as the Conqs earned the 8-5 win.
Stewart threw his third consecutive complete game as he tossed seven innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks, with two strikeouts, to earn the win.
Three Conqs logged a multi-hit game to lead an 11-hit attack in the win. Longoria was 2-4 with two RBI, while
Angel Vazquez went 2-4 with a run scored and a double. Morgan added a 2-3 showing with a run scored, a triple, and an RBI.
Game 2 – Won 11-7 at Colby
Conqs just like game one jumped on the Trojans early this time, getting a three-run home run by
Preston Harrison in the first inning. Colby got a solo home run in the bottom of the first, but the Conqs led 3-1 after one inning of action. After a scoreless second, the Conqs used five free passes to get two runs in the third and lead 5-1. Colby again belted a solo home run in the bottom of the third to get back on the board. In the sixth, Guerrero tattooed his second home run of the day, and the Conqs held a 6-2 advantage. Two more home runs in the bottom of the sixth for Colby pulled the Trojans within two, and then one more run in the inning made it a one-run game. In the eighth inning, the Conqs exploded for five runs with a three-run homer by
Bynum Martinez and a two-run homer by Harrison, his second home run of the contest. Colby continued to make a push, scoring two in the bottom of the ninth, but the Conqs worked through the inning to earn the 11-7 win.
Five Conqs notched multi-hit games in the second game of the day as the team recorded 13 hits in the win. Martinez was 3-6 with a run scored, three RBI, and a home run, while Harrison was 2-4 with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored. Stukenborg added a 2-4 game with a double and an RBI, with Longoria adding a 2-4 game with three runs scored. Guerrero went 2-4 with two runs scored with a home run, an RBI, and a walk.
Michael Bizier earned the win, tossing 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks, with four strikeouts.
Aydin Ruiz capped the game, throwing the final 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out four.
