Conquistadors pound out 22 hits, beat NMMI on road, 17-8

DC3's Frankie Valle makes contact with a pitch earlier this season.
Box Score HOBBS, N.M. -- The Dodge City Community College baseball team pounded out 22 hits to help overcome a five-error performance in a 17-8 victory over New Mexico Military Institute on Friday at Ray Birmingham Thunderbird Field.

Every player in the Conquistador (3-0) lineup had multiple hits as DC3 scored runs in seven of the nine innings, including three in the first inning (DC3 has scored 11 first-inning runs this season) that gave the Conqs a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"We still left a lot of opportunities out there," DC3 coach Phil Stephenson said. "But for this only being our third game and having a lot of young players that are still making young-player mistakes, I'm pleased with the way we hit the ball."

NMMI (3-6) cut the DC3 lead to 5-4 in the fifth inning before a Frankie Valle run-scoring single in the sixth gave the Conqs a little breathing room as they expanded the lead to 10-4 with a four-run seventh - highlighted by a Max Laney two-run single.

"The game got close, but we made their starter throw a lot of pitches early on and were able to get him out and into their bullpen," Stephenson said.

DC3 scored five more in the eighth before a two-run home run by Jason Nichols in the ninth closed out the scoring for the Conqs.

Ivan Gonzalez paced DC3 by going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs, Nichols finished 3-for-6 with a home run, double, two RBI and three runs, Ricky Trammell was 3-for-6 with a double, two RBI and a run, Laney was 2-for-5 with five RBI, a triple and a run and Andres Acuna was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs.

Layne Downing (2-0) got the start and win for the Conqs, going five innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.

The Conqs and Broncos play a doubleheader 1 p.m. Saturday again in Hobbs (Roswell-based NMMI's field is still undergoing renovations).

The first game will pit two New Mexico State University signees against each other as DC3 left-hander Matthew Perea will take on 6-foot-11 NMMI left-hander Kody Jones - who played for the Dodge City A's this past summer.
