Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- A strong defensive effort found the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team up eight points at the half at 37-29 over Colby.
That defensive intensity disappeared for nearly the first 14 minutes of the second half as the Conquistadors trailed the Trojans 59-58 with 6:19 remaining.
However, DC3 found its defensive fire again just in time as it went on a 16-3 run the rest of the way to defeat Colby 74-62 Wednesday and clinch the fourth seed in the Region VI Tournament.
"The first half we really guarded well," Campbell said. "We didn't start the second half well and let them back into the game with some careless turnovers. ... But the last five minutes we really showed some grit. We made some stops and were able to get some great looks. We were able to extend the lead and make some free throws down the stretch."
The Conqs (20-8, 11-6) are two games ahead of Barton with two games left and even if DC3 and Barton tied, the Conqs own the tiebreaker with two head-to-head wins this season. The Conqs can't catch Pratt for third place, however, because the best DC3 can do is tie the Beavers - but it would lose the tiebreaker due to losing the teams' lone head-to-head matchup this season.Â
In Wednesday's win for the Conqs, they combined that strong defense with accurate shooting from beyond the arc to come away with the victory. DC3 went 11-for-19 from 3-point range - tied for the second-most 3s it has hit in a game this season and setting a season high for 3-point percentage (57.9 percent - the first time the Conqs have shot better than 50 percent from beyond the arc this season).
Leading the way from long distance was
Lorenzo Dillard, who went 5-for-5 from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with three assists and three steals.
Jonathan Joseph had 16 points and was 2-for-2 from long distance,
Josh Boutte had 11 points and nine rebounds and
Jamie Rutherford finished with 10 points.
The Conqs also shared the ball well, assisting on 19 of their 23 field goals in the game with
James Newton leading the way with six assists as seven different players had an assist for DC3.
All of that helped the Conqs overcome being outrebounded 43-28 - including allowing 16 offensive rebounds. The 28 rebounds is a season low for the Conqs as DC3 struggled with the size of Colby.
Bilal Abdur-Rahim, the younger brother of former NBA All-Star Shareef Abdur-Rahim, led Colby with 15 points while 7-foot-2 Ahmed Ismail had nine points and eight rebounds and 6-foot-10 Hassan Attia had six points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The Conqs host Seward 3 p.m. Saturday.
