Sophomore Night Goes Amiss For DC3 Volleyball vs. Seward

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Hoping to send out six sophomores in style in their last home competition, the Dodge City Community College volleyball team could not overcome a quick-paced Seward County Community Community College in an 18-25, 23-25, 18-25 loss at the Student Activities Center on Monday, October 17th.

DC3 is now 19-14 on the year in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Saints kept pace with Hutchinson for the No. 2 seed and improved to 20-9 and 11-2 in conference play.

After jumping out to a 4-0 start in the first set, DC3 would struggle to hold Seward County in check and eventually fall by a score of 18-25. In a much closer second set, DC3 would fight back and forth with the Saints for the lead throughout before digging a 20-23 hole that they could not recover from in a 23-25 set loss. The third set would look much like the first as the Conquistadors would start out strong before digging themselves a hole in the middle that they could not overcome.

We showed that we are right on the cusp of being one of the top conference teams" said head volleyball coach Kamri Nehls in a postgame interview. "We're competing well and holding our own against the top three teams in the KJCCC and I am very thankful for the sophomores on this team and the amount of work that they have put in to turn around the program this season."

Sophomore Tenille Tholen led the team with 12 digs while fellow sophomore Mariah Watkins had 10 kills and one ace. Sada Smith would finish with eight kills while Daisy Cheek would record a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Raquel Valdez, who set the career blocks record earlier this season, added to her total with two solo blocks and three assists.

With three conference matches left to play, DC3 will hit the road starting on Wednesday to take on a pesky Butler team that is currently half a game ahead of them in the conference standings. Earlier this year, the Grizzlies took a five-set match over the Conqs in the opening game of the DC3 tournament.
