Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- While the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team and Butler were tied at 37 at the half, Conquistador coach
Kyle Campbell knew his team was allowing Butler to stay in the game by allowing 16 first-half offensive rebounds that led to 11 second-chance points.
DC3 tightened up its rebounding in the second half and slowly pulled away for a 74-66 victory over the Grizzlies on Wednesday at the Dodge City Civic Center - snapping the Conqs' three-game losing skid.
"We gave up way too many offensive rebounds (in the first half)," Campbell said. If you take half of those away - we are leading (at the half). It wasn't a pretty game, but I'll take a win any way we can get it right now. The guys played hard in the second half. ...
"Wins are hard to come by in this conference."With as much as DC3 (11-5, 2-3) was struggling to keep Butler (10-7, 2-4) off of the glass in the first 20 minutes, it did just as good a job limiting the Grizzlies in the second half as they grabbed only two offensive rebounds.
Still, the Conqs trailed 43-42 with under 16 minutes left when the second of consecutive 3-pointers by
Jeremy Treaudo gave DC3 a 45-43 advantage with 15:49 remaining - a lead it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the contest.
The Conqs slowly increased the lead to double digits after a pair of
Josh Boutte baskets and two
Mario Ponds free throws turned it from a 57-53 advantage into a 63-53 lead.
Jamil Hood followed with an off-balance 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer to give DC3 its largest lead at 66-53 as Butler wouldn't get closer than six points the rest of the contest.
Boutte led DC3 with 20 points and eight rebounds, Hood had 14 points and a team-high four assists,
Jonathan Joseph had 12 points thanks to going 8-for-10 from the free-throw line while Treaudo had 10 points and a pair of steals.
DC3 shot 50 percent from the field in the game, including 55.6 percent (15-for-27) in the second half.
Daven Joseph led Butler with 14 points while Rashawn Chapman added 10 as the Grizzlies shot 37.1 percent from the field.
The Conqs travel to take on Independence 6 p.m. Saturday.
