Box Score LIBERAL, Kan. -- At 6-foot-6, Dodge City forward
Josh Boutte uses a relentless pursuit of rebounds, a blue-collar work ethic and athleticism to quietly put up big numbers for the Conquistadors against usually bigger competition.
However, there was nothing quiet about what the redshirt freshman did Saturday night against Seward.
Boutte dominated the paint and racked up 41 points, 23 rebounds and two blocks in helping the Conqs lead nearly from wire-to-wire (much of the time in double figures) in an 82-74 victory over the Saints at The Greenhouse - their first win against Seward in Liberal since 2008.
DC3's Boutte finished with his sixth consecutive double-double and 12th in 22 games for the Conqs. In fact, Boutte had a double-double in each half against Seward - going for 16 points and 11 rebounds in the first 20 minutes and 25 points and 12 rebounds in the final 20 minutes.
"Josh was just an unbelievable man tonight," DC3 coach
Kyle Campbell said.
Boutte said playing an undersized Seward team, he knew he could contribute heavily.
"Early on in the first half I knew (I could have a big game)," Boutte said. "(The key) was energy."
The Conqs (16-6 overall, 7-4 KJCCC) jumped out to a 14-7 advantage early in the game and eventually built a commanding 41-25 halftime lead thanks to holding Seward (17-6, 7-5) to 26.7 percent shooting in the first half.
DC3's lead eventually grew to as much as 20 early in the second half before the Saints' press started giving the Conqs some problems. DC3 finished with 27 turnovers in the game.
The lead grew to as small as seven in the final minutes before the Conqs hit a few free throws and held on for the victory.
It wasn't just Boutte dominating the glass as the Conqs outrebounded Seward 61-31 in the game - including holding the Saints to just five offensive rebounds.
"I thought we played hard for 40 minutes tonight," Campbell said. "We just always weren't smart with the ball. ... But we stuck with our game plan ... and outrebounding a team by 30 will cover up some of the mistakes we made."
To go along with Boutte's big night,
James Newton had 15 points, four assists and two steals,
Lorenzo Dillard had nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals while
Jeremy Treaudo chipped in with seven points.
Marcus Mathieu came off the bench to lead Seward with 18 points while Niem Stevenson, the KJCCC's leading scorer, finished below his average with 16 points.
DC3 has a quick turnaround as they host Cloud County 8 p.m. Monday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
