Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- As
Josh Boutte's free throw slid through the net to complete a three-point play with 18 seconds remaining to give Dodge City its first lead in more than 35 minutes of play at 71-70, it looked like the Conquistadors were going to steal one from rival Garden City and keep their four-game winning streak alive and hand the Broncbusters their fifth-straight loss.
However, the lead was short lived as Garden City's James McNeal hit a mid-range jumper with 9.5 seconds left to take the lead and DC3 never recovered during a 74-71 loss Wednesday evening at the Dodge City Civic Center.
Following McNeal's basket to make it 72-71, the Conqs'
Lorenzo Dillard - who finished with a game-high 21 points - was called for an offensive foul as he drove to the basket with four seconds remaining. DC3 was forced to foul and Josh Fleming hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to 74-71 with three seconds left.
A long, full-court heave eventually found DC3's
James Newton, but his off-balance, game-tying 3-point attempt was off the mark and the Conqs' win streak was snapped.
While the Conqs (14-6 overall, 5-4 KJCCC) once again struggled from the free-throw line - going 13-for-28 - DC3 coach
Kyle Campbell pointed toward his team's inconsistent play and poor overall shooting (the Conqs, who lead the conference in field goal percentage, shot 41.7 percent from the field Wednesday).
"We had a couple bad spurts where they were able to build that 8-to-10-point lead and we were just trying to do too much at times," Campbell said. "It just wasn't our night. We didn't shoot it well. I thought they played well and (Fleming) hit some big shots for them down the stretch. ... We got beat by a better team tonight. We got to get back to work and get ready for Colby."
DC3 took a 5-4 advantage on a Boutte putback with 15:25 left - but it would be their last lead until Boutte's three-point play with 18 seconds left in the game. A Garden City 6-0 run made it 10-5 and the Broncbusters eventually took a 31-24 advantage into the break - a half that saw DC3 shoot 33.3 percent from the field and just 4-for-14 from the free-throw line.
To go along with Dillard's 21 points and four assists, Newton had 16 points and five rebounds, Boutte had 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals while
Jeremy Treaudo finished with 10 points and three rebounds.
Fleming led Garden City with 19 points while McNeal added 18.
DC3 returns to action Wednesday at Colby.
