DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College men's basketball team has turned its fortunes after a brief skid and look to keep that momentum going when the Conquistadors travel to play No. 10 Hutchinson 7:30 p.m. Wednesday - a Blue Dragons team that has lost its last two games.
The Conqs had lost three straight, including a pair of overtime games, before defeating Butler 74-66 on Jan. 6 in Dodge City. DC3 followed that up with a strong performance in an 82-68 victory at Independence on Saturday to move to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in KJCCC play.
In the win over Independence,
Josh Boutte had a strong game with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as the freshman is averaging 14.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game (second in the conference). He's leading the KJCCC in field goal percentage at 66.5 percent. Saturday was also Boutte's seventh double-double of the season.
The Conqs have seven players averaging 7.5 points or more per game in
Lorenzo Dillard (16.9), Boutte (14.8),
James Newton (13.0),
Jamil Hood (9.9),
Jamie Rutherford (9.0),
Jeremy Treaudo (8.8) and
Jonathan Joseph (7.5).
Hutchinson entered last week 16-0 and the top-ranked team in the nation before a triple-overtime 113-111 loss at home to Cowley on Jan. 6 and a 78-77 loss on the road at Butler to drop to 16-2 overall and 5-2 in KJCCC play, a half game behind Barton for first.
A trio of guards leads the Blue Dragons in scoring in 6-foot-7 Bashir Ahmed (20.7), 5-foot-11 Samajae Haynes-Jones (14.9) and 6-foot-1 Akbar Hoffman (14.5). 6-foot-7 forward Shakur Juiston is also averaging double figures at 11.1 points per game. Ahmed also leads the team in rebounding (7.6), is second in steals (1.2) and third in blocks (1.2).
DC3 and Hutchinson enter the game as the two top shooting teams in the conference with the Conqs shooting 49.9 percent from the field while the Blue Dragons are shooting  49.4 percent.Â
Last season DC3 and Hutchinson split their two games - each winning on the road. The Conqs won in Hutchinson, 86-82, while the Blue Dragons won in Dodge City, 79-63.
