Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Before the ball even hit the court for match point, the Dodge City Community College volleyball team and many in the loud crowd in attendance let loose a victorious cheer and leaped to their feet - or off their feet in some cases - as the Conquistadors broke their 11-match losing streak in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) sweep of Butler on Thursday at DC3 Gymnasium.
For the most part DC3 (3-17 overall, 1-5 KJCCC) controlled the match against the Grizzlies (4-15, 2-5) as the Conquistadors never trailed by more than three points at any point.
"It's been a long time ... but they deserved it," DC3 coach
Ashley Nehls said. "They played hard."
The closest set of the match was the first as DC3 held a slim 23-22 advantage before back-to-back points gave the Conqs the game and momentum going into the second game. Momentum and not waiting for the other team to make mistakes were key for the Conqs, according to Nehls.
"One thing that we do and focus on ... is earning it," Nehls said. "We want to earn our own points and play good offense and defense. We don't want to wait for the other team to make mistakes. For the first time tonight, we did that. We took the initiative and kept the momentum on our side."
The momentum was obvious as DC3 jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set and never relinquished it. A kill by
Brianna Doussa capped the second set 25-20, sending the crowd into a frenzy of anticipation for the third.
The loud and supportive atmosphere did nothing but boost the Conqs, Nehls said.
"It makes it so fun and the girls have a good time playing in front of a crowd like this," Nehls said. "It's good to see the support of the other student athletes out here."
The third set was close at 18-16 before a kill by DC3's
Hailee Hoskinson ignited a 4-1 mini run for the Conqs as they eventually closed it out 25-20.
Sada Smith led DC3 with seven kills and 10 digs while Doussa had six kills and three block assists and
Casey Cox added six kills.
Katie Garcia notched four aces for DC3,
Tenille Tholen had nine assists and
Briana Brown had eight assists.
