Box Score WICHITA, Kansas: DC3 baseball (40-18) fell 4-3 to the nationally ranked #1 Cowley County after a hard-fought nine-inning ballgame.
Despite going down by one in the bottom of the second, DC3 came back big in the third. Sophomore
Jorden Fields led off the inning with a 1-2 count. On pitch three, he laced a dinger past the right field fence to tie things up.
The rest of the inning was all hot for the Conqs after that with back-to-back-to-back singles by
Hayden Simmons (1-2 count),
Colbey Madewell (0-0 bunt) and
Johnny Balsamo (1-2 count) to load the bases.
Frankie Valle then walked on a 3-2 count and after ten pitches for an RBI to put the Conqs up by one for the first time in the night.
Leno Ramirez closed out the inning with another single through the left side on a 2-2 opportunity.
With a two-run lead, both teams stayed scoreless until the seventh inning. At that time, the Tigers' offense collected three runs on three hits including a two run homerun by nine-hole Abdiel Alicia to even things up. An RBI fielder's choice option to first base scored the deciding run.
In the top of the eighth, the Conqs had runners on the corners with two outs and a attempt by Valle to run home was cut short by the Cowley catcher on the shallow dribble behind him for the third out of the inning.
Jorden Fields was more than clutch today with a 3-4 performance at the plate. He had one RBI on a long ball and eight putouts behind the plate.
Leno Ramirez kept up his strong postseason performance with two hits in four at bats. He tabbed one RBI and an assist on the day. Valle tabbed an RBI and one hit and walk in the game and
Johnny Balsamo,
Hayden Simmons and Madewell each tabbed hits.
Layne Downing was money on the hill through 6.1 impressive innings. He fanned four and threw 98 pitches while giving up seven hits.
Matthew Perea kept his ERA at 0.00 for the NJCAA Region VI Tournament after tossing 1.2 innings and giving up no runs on three hits while striking out four.
The Conqs will face off against #1 Cowley in a rematch tomorrow at 7 PM at Lawrence-Dumont Field in Wichita, Kansas.
