Box Score WICHITA, Kansas: DC3 baseball keeps on making history, this time as the first team in Dodge City baseball program history to earn a berth in the NJCAA World Series and as the NJCAA Region VI Champions, defeating nationally ranked #1 Cowley College 7-1 in Wichita, Kansas at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Conquistadors were everything but worried as they took the field today against the Tigers, confident in sophomore right-hander
Luke Crabb.
Celebrating his 21
st birthday by pitching the nine-inning four-hitter to lead the Conqs to a stunning 7-1 victory. He fanned eight on the day, giving up only one run after 145 pitches and facing 35 total batters.
The game was quiet until the third when DC3 broke things open, startgin with a huge single to left field on a full count by catcher
Tim Wakefield.
Johnny Balsamo then singled to center on a full count and
Frankie Valle loaded the bases after reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop.
The always reliable and dominant
Leno Ramirez then smoked a triple down the right field line to clear the bases. Then after a smart pitching change by the Cowley Tigers,
Josh Williams stepped up big and dropped a two-run bomb past the left field fence to extend the Conq lead to 5-0.
To follow up in the fourth inning,
Colbey Madewell started things off with a bunt single to third base. He moved to second on a well-placed sacrifice bunt by Wakefield. With two outs, Valle reached on yet another fielding error by the shortstop, scoring Madewell from second and keeping the Conqs at the plate with a runner at first.
Ramirez singled through the left side and Williams singled to the shortstop to load the bases. Then after another pitching change, a wild pitch and a good read at third Valle scored to put the Conqs up 7-0, heading into the back five innings.
Cowley worked for one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Crabb, along with a more than impressive DC3 defense put the Tigers under, sending them to Grand Junction and their first-ever berth in the NJCAA World Series.
In the game, Ramirez led the team with three RBIs on a 2-5 performance at the plate. The sophomore tabbed one triple at the plate with owning one assist on a hot ball down the right field line at third base.
Williams went 2-4 with two RBIs, a dinger and one run on the day. Balsamo,
Jordan Doan, Madewell and Wakefield each garnered one hit with Doan owning a double for the Conquistadors.
DC3 outfield was more than effective, tabbing 13 collective putouts including four from left fielder
Hayden Simmons and three apiece from centerfielder Balsamo and right fielder Doan.
Ricky Trammell earned seven putouts, Wakefield posted eight and Valle was more than at second with one putout and two assists on the day. Madewell finished up with one assist and one putout at shortstop.
