Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kansas: Dodge City softball dropped game one 7-3, but came back big with 14 hits in game two for a 9-5 victory over the visiting Seward County.
Dodge City started off the day with a 1-0 advantage after scoring in the first inning. Seward countered with a run in the third and then continued to pile on seven more runs throughout the next four innings. The Conqs managed to score one more run in both the fourth and seventh innings, but the Saints shut them down eventually to take home the 7-3 win.
Heather Amen went 2-4 with one RBI in the game.
Taryn Garza had an RBI, along with five putouts and two assists at shortstop. Sophomores
Lindsey Karlin,
Kaitlyn Amaral and
Ashley Beavers each had hits; Karlin's being her 24
th double of the season. Sophomore
Shelby Bowman walked once and had two putouts and five assists in an impressive showing at the hot corner.
Jordan Mecham picks up the loss after pitching the complete seven-inning game. She fanned four and allowed six earned runs on 14 hits and 34 batters faced.
In game two, the Conqs came out hot in the bottom of the second inning after giving up two runs in the top of the frame.
In the inning, the Conqs tallied five runs to go up 5-2 over the Saints.
Sophomore
Courtney Rettig led off the inning with a solo-homerun outside of left field. Sophomore
Chantal Prester then doubled to right field and scored on a single up the middle by sophomore
Danielle Aldana.
Amaral then walked to put runners on first and third and both moved to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Beavers. Karlin brought in both Aldana and Amaral on a choice single to center field, and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Saints' centerfielder.
She advanced to third on wild pitch and continued across the plate on a double to right center by Garza before Seward County closed out the inning with the three-run deficit.
The Saints threatened again in the third, gathering two more runs to close the gap to one run, but DC3 refused to roll over.
They answered in the bottom of the third with Prester scoring on a single up the middle by Amaral and again in the fourth when Karlin scored on a single up the middle by Rettig.
Seward County scored their fifth and final run in the fifth inning, but Dodge City garnered two more in the bottom of the sixth to seal the deal.
Bowman led off the inning with a homerun to left field. Rettig then singled to the left side of the infield. Head Coach
Howie Smith then put fresh legs on the bases, pinch running
Samantha Bashor for Rettig.
Adalynn Tanton, pinch hitting for Prester, sent a ball to the right side to advance Bashor to second on a groundout. Aldana walked and Amaral reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, scoring Bashor and leaving runners and first and second.
After a Saints pitching change, the visitors ended the inning in the next play.
In the top of the seventh, Bowman picked off a hot liner the post the first out. Sophomore pitcher
Lauren Kelley then forced a groundout to Garza at shortstop and then forced the a fly out to centerfield to end the game with a 9-5 victory.
Kelley struck out three in the effort, giving up three earned runs on 11 hits throughout seven complete innings and 32 batters. The right-hander did not give up one walk all day.
Rettig went 3-4 with two RBIs and one run. Karlin, Garza, Prester, Aldana and Amaral each had two hits in the game. Karlin also tabbed two RBIs and a walk and Garza, Bowman, Aldana and Amaral each had solo RBIs in the game. Bowman owned the one homerun at the plate, Garza tabbed two doubles and Prester owned a double.
Garza owned one putout and seven assists from short, Bowman tabbed four putouts and one assist and Aldana owned nine putouts in the game. Prester and Rettig each had three putouts from second and behind the plate respectively.
