Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kansas: Dodge City baseball won the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference series with Garden City this weekend after finishing day two with one win and one loss.
The Conqs took day one yesterday and continued their success with an early win in game one today, taking the Broncbusters for a 9-8 seven-inning victory. Game two was not so friendly to the Conqs, allowing the visiting Busters a 4-2 nine-inning win to end the day, finishing the series 3-1.
Russell Mithlo (6-0)earned the win in game one. After a few runs scored in the first inning, Mithlo settled down for a while, eventually scattering seven runs on eight hits while fanning seven.
Adam Rutz and Mathew Perea each came up in rotation, with Rutz striking out one and allowing two hits and no runs and Perea allowing one unearned run on two hits.
Cory Royer earned his second save of the season after shutting down the last batter of the game.
After the Broncbusters going 2-0 to start the game and picking up another run in the third inning, DC3 managed to put solo runs on the board in the first, second and third innings to even things up.
DC3 then brought out their bats to put three runs across the plate in the fourth and fifth innings, earning a 9-3 lead going into the sixth inning.
After a few scoreless innings, Garden City added four runs in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the seventh before the Conquistadors managed to shut them down for good.
Despite allowing the Busters to come back to a one-run deficit, the Conquistadors came away with the 9-8 win to open the day.
Frankie Valle went 3-4 with one RBI and one run. He also had two putouts and two assists in the game.
Ricky Trammell went 2-3 with three RBIs and a double.
Johnny Balsamo and
Jorden Fields had two hits in the game with Balsamo owning an RBI.
Leno Ramirez sent his first homerun of the day outside the right field fence to tab two RBIs.
Hayden Simmons and
Colbey Madewell also had hits in the game with Madewell picking up a RBI for DC3.
After allowing one run to start game two in the first inning, DC3 came back in the bottom of the frame to even things up.
Balsamo singled to start the offensive for the Conqs. Valle then walked and Ramirez flew out to center field to advance Balsamo to third.
Josh Williams then sent a grounder to the right side to score Balsamo and even things up.
The Busters then gained a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning, a lead the Conqs would never completely close.
Dodge City had multiple opportunities to score, but managed only to cross one more run in the third inning on a solo shot outside the right field fence for Ramirez's second homerun of the day and 10
th of the 2015 season.
The Conqs eventually fell 4-2 to close the four-game series.
Andrew Riddell (4-3) picks up the loss after allowing three earned runs on nine hits. He fanned eight while facing 34 batters in seven complete innings.
Garrett Hammond,
Corey Land and
Phillip Albracht collectively finished the game. Hammond faced two batters and allowed one run on one hit. Land gave up one hit after facing four and Albracht struck out one while closing out the final three batters in the last inning.
Madewell went 3-3 with a double and a walk. Balsamo went 2-4 with a double, one run and five putouts in centerfield.
Leno Ramirez had one RBI on his solo-homerun and
Jorden Fields added a hit in the game.
On the weekend, Ramirez went 7-13 with 10 RBIs, seven runs, three homeruns a sacrifice fly, hit by pitch and walk. The sophomore garnered a .538 batting average, 1.231 slugging percentage and .562 on-base percentage. He tabbed one putout and five assists at third base.
Balsamo owned a .600 at the plate after going 9-15 with seven runs, four RBIS, a double, homerun and three stolen bases. He tabbed a .867 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage. He also had nine putouts and one assist in center.
Ricky Trammell collected eight RBIs while going 5-14 and
Frankie Valle went 7-17 with two RBIs.
Next, the Conqs head to Hesston College to play at 4 and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14.
