Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kansas: Dodge City baseball (28-12, 14-8) collected 10 hits in game one and 15 hits in game two in the first day of the KJCCC series with Garden City Community College. The collective 25 hits on the day propelled the Conqs to two exciting victories over the Broncbusters, defeating the visitors 11-0 in five innings in game one and 14-10 in a nine-inning offensive brawl for game two.
Game one lasted five innings with
Luke Crabb (5-2) pitching a one-hit shutout over the Broncbusters to start the day. He fanned eight throughout 19 batter's faced on the day.
The strong defensive to open the game helped the Conqs find the energy to get their bats going. DC3 led off the game with
Johnny Balsamo reaching on a single, working around the bases and scoring on a fielding error by the shortstop.
DC3 continued to get runs later on in the game, plating four in the third and six in the fourth to eventually take the game 11-0, their fifth shutout of the season.
Balsamo went 3-3 with a homerun and one RBI along with three runs in the game.
Ricky Trammell posted his first homerun of the season, and it was a huge grand slam in the fourth inning.
Josh Williams and
Leno Ramirez went 2-3 with two runs at the plate. Williams added a three-run homerun for the Conqs while Ramirez boasted two RBIs.
Frankie Valle and
Jordan Doan also tallied hits on the board for DC3 throughout the game.
Game two was a hitting free-for-all, starting with the Conqs in the first inning when Balsamo scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Ramirez.
The Broncbusters answered with a run of their own in the top of the second and continued to plate runs with two in the third and one in the fourth to go up 4-1 over the Conqs.
DC3 scored again in the fourth inning starting with
Jordan Doan as he reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Trammell then singled through the right side to advance Doan to third.
Hayden Simmons got in on the action in the next at bat as he singled up the middle to pick up his first RBI of the day.
Later in the inning,
Colbey Madewell singled through the right side to score Trammell and Balsamo laid down a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Valle concluded the Conqs' scoring in the fourth with a single through the right side to score Madewell and put the Conqs up 5-4.
In the sixth, Garden City tied the game, but DC3 was not far behind in the seventh, scoring on a single to left field by Doan that plated Ramirez.
Then came the eighth inning.
Garden City poked a grand slam homerun past the left field fence to go up 9-6 over the Conqs.
Despite folding after a damaging grand slam in the previous inning, DC3 came out to play in the bottom of the frame. Madewell led off, reaching on a fielding error by the pitcher. Balsamo then walked and Valle singled in the infield to load the bases.
Sophomore
Leno Ramirez stepped up to the task and laced out a hard-hit grand slam of his own that found its home way past the right field fence, putting the Conqs up 10-9.
DC3 tabbed eight runs on five hits and one Broncbuster error in the inning to head into the ninth inning up 14-9. Garden City managed to cross one more run before Dodge City shut the door and finished with a 14-10 victory.
Ramirez finished the game 3-4 with five RBIs and two runs. Valle was 3-6 with one RBI and one run. Balsamo, Williams and Trammell had two hits in the game. Balsamo owned two RBIs, two walks and two runs, Williams tallied a double and Trammell picked up one RBI.
Doan, Simmons and MAdewell also had hits and RBIs in the game.
Cory Royer (3-1) picks up the win after closing down the final 1.2 innings He fanned one and allowed one run on three hits.
Layne Downing earned the start in game two, fanning four batters and scattering five runs on nine hits throughout 5.2 innings pitched.
Austin Hammer worked the middle, striking out three and allowing four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.
The Conqs and Broncbusters will be back at it tomorrow, April 12 at 1:05 p.m. for the second day of the four-game KJCCC series.
