Box Score 4 DODGE CITY, Kansas: It was a beautiful day in Dodge City, Kansas today, perfect for some well-played baseball games.
Dodge City advanced to 4-2 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and 11-3 overall after taking three games in the four-game series with Colby Community College.
On day one, the teams split with Dodge taking game one 9-8 before dropping the second 7-6.
In the first game, the Conqs posted 17 hits for the 9-8 win. Despite going down 2-0 after the Trojans put up one run in the first and one in the third, DC3 worked back into the lead after crossing three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
They posted two in each the fourth and fifth to go up 7-2, but allowed five runs in the seventh inning to allow Colby back into the game. Colby added one in the top of the eighth, but Dodge City successfully worked for two more runs in the bottom of the frame for the one-run victory to start the series.
Jordan Doan had an impressive performance at the plate after going a perfect 4-4 with one RBI and two runs. Both
Johnny Balsamo and
Leno Ramirez put in 3-4 outings for the win and every other Conq in the lineup had one hit in the game.
Ricky Trammell led the team with two RBIs.
Luke Crabb started the game and worked through 6.2 innings, striking out 10 while allowing nine hits and his first seven runs of the season. Six of his runs given up were earned.
Layne Downing pitched solid for one inning, allowing four hits and one run while putting down two.
Anthony Bowmaker (1-1) earned his first win of the 2015 campaign.
In game two, Colby opened the game with one run in the first inning and five in the second. Dodge countered with one run in the first, second, third and fifth innings for the two-run deficit.
Colby scored again in the top of the sixth to finish out their scoring in the game with seven runs. Dc3 attempted to come back, but their two runs in the sixth were not enough to take home the second victory. Fans eventually saw the Conqs fall 7-6 to end the day.
Jason Nichols led the team with two RBIs and eight total Conquistadors tabbed hits on the day. Balsamo, Williams, Doan and
Frankie Valle each posted a RBI towards the Conq effort.
Cory Royer (1-1) was tabbed with his first loss of the season after allowing five hits and six runs, two of which were earned, while striking out one in 1.2 innings of work.
Matthew Perea pitched the next chunk of game, allowing four hits and one run while fanning two in 4.1 innings.
Adam Rutz and
Austin Hammer closed out the game with Rutz pitching through two outs and allowing one hit and Hammer closing out the last out of the game.
On day two, DC3 owned the diamond after sweeping the day with two victories, 6-2 and 5-1.
Colby had the lead in the first inning after putting one on the board early, but Dodge came back to tie things up in the fourth inning and then took over the lead in the fifth after putting five more runs on the board. The Trojans tried to come back in the seventh, working for one run but were unable to close the gap.
Eight Conquistadors had hits in the first game. Ramirez led the team with four RBIs after roping a grand slam to left field in the fifth inning. Balsamo and
Josh Williams each had an RBI and a hit for the Conqs as well.
Russell Mithlo (3-0) commanded the hill throughout seven innings of work. He fanned nine and allowed only three hits after 26 batter's faced.
Game two was quiet.
Josh Williams sent a solo shot outside the fence to put the Conqs up 1-0 in the second inning, but neither team scored again until the eighth inning rolled around.
The Conquistadors went on a big run and tabbed four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Colby tried to come back, but yet again were denied by Dodge City as the Conqs allowed only one run in the top of the ninth inning.
Balsamo led the game with a 2-4 performance at the plate, while
Colbey Madewell, Williams and Hutchison each had hits. Hutchison led the Conqs with two RBIs in the second game and Williams also tallied one.
Andrew Riddell (2-1) threw hard off the rubber for DC3 for the win, tallying seven strikeouts and allowing only five hits throughout seven innings of work. Through 27 batters, the sophomore was keeping the opposition scoreless.
Adam Rutz came in next for the Conqs, fanning two and giving up two hits in 1.1 innings.
Anthony Bowmaker closed out the last two batters of the game.
Next, the Conqs head to Seward County to make up the snowed out game from last week. The double header will start at 2 p.m. with the second game's first pitch being thrown 20 minutes after the completion of the first. Then, DC3 will return home on Wednesday, March 11 to take on Brown Mackie at 2 and 4 p.m.
