DC3 Baseball Finishes with Split Weekend after Going 1-1 with Butler on Day Two

DODGE CITY, Kansas: Spring was in the air at Cavalier Field today as Dodge City Conquistador baseball took on the Butler Grizzlies to close out a KJCCC four-game series.

The Grizzlies took game one after a close 5-4 eight-inning struggle.  Dodge City then came back strong in game two for the 3-1 win to close out the weekend 2-2.
 
DC3 scored first in game one on a solo-shot outside of right field by Leno Ramirez.  Butler answered in the second and continued to find scoring opportunities later in the game.
 
The Grizzlies crossed another in the fourth and two in the fifth to gain the 4-1 lead. 
 
Dodge anted up in the bottom of the fifth starting with a walk to lead off the frame by Jorden FieldsHayden Simmons then stroked a double through the right side, advancing Fields to third. 
 
Max Laney then stepped up big with a well-placed double to left center that scored both Fields and Simmons.  Then after a pitching change and a few Grizzlies' putouts, Jason Nichols roped a single to right field, scoring Laney.
 
With things tied up, the game eventually finished in extra innings.  In the top of the eighth, Butler put a runner on with a double and moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt.  A sacrifice fly awarded the Grizzlies the 5-4 lead they would need to eventually take the game.
 
Matthew Perea drops his record to 2-1 after closing up the last 1.2 innings.  He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one.  Russell Mithlo earned the start and pitched strong throughout.  He gave up four hits while fanning three in 28 batters faced.  While he was on the hill, the Grizzlies garnered one earned run and four runs total.
 
Johnny Balsamo led the Conqs with a 2-4 output at the plate.  Laney closed up the game with two RBIs and one hit and Nichols and Ramirez owned one hit and one RBI.  Jordan Doan, Josh Williams and Hayden Simmons also had hits in the game.
 
Along with his homerun (his fourth), Ramirez posted three putouts and four assists from third on the defensive end.
 
Andrew Riddell threw strong in the second game, eventually garnering his fourth win (4-1) of the season.  He kept the Grizzlies hitless until the fifth inning and in a full seven-innings pitched, the sophomore fanned seven, allowed a low-four hits and only one run.
 
DC3 scored in the third inning on a solo-homerun by Balsamo, his second of the season. 
 
The Conqs earned their next runs in the fifth, starting the excitement off with a single through the left side from Ricky Trammell.  Simmons and Tim Wakefield then walked to load the bases.  Balsamo doubled to right center, posting two more RBIS.
 
Riddell and the Dodge City defense kept the Grizzlies scoreless until the seventh inning when BCC tabbed one run to close the game 3-1 with a DC3 win.
 
Trammell went 3-3 in the game with nine putouts and Balsamo tabbed all three RBIs in the game on two hits and owned three putouts from centerfield.
 
Colbey Madewell had one putout and five assists from shortstop and Jordan Doan charted three putouts in right field.
 
Dodge is now 19-7 on the season and 10-6 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. 
 
For their next game, DC3 travels to Otero Junior College on Wednesday, March 25.  The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
