DC3 Baseball Splits Day One with Butler

DODGE CITY, Kansas: It was a beautiful day for baseball at Cavalier Field today as DC3 Conquistador baseball faced off against the Butler Grizzlies for the first doubleheader in a four-game series.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kansas:  It was a beautiful day for baseball at Cavalier Field today as DC3 Conquistador baseball faced off against the Butler Grizzlies for the first doubleheader in a four-game series.

The Conqs went 1-1 with the Grizzlies coming back for a 6-1 win in game two after a 3-1 loss in game one.

The first game started heavily offensive, with Butler crossing two runs in the first inning to kick off the game.

Dodge countered with one run in the bottom of the frame to close out the inning.  Johnny Balsamo stared off the inning with a roped triple to the right field fence.  Leno Ramirez then doubled to right center to score Balsamo before the Grizzlies closed the door.

Heading in to inning seven, the Conqs let up and allowed one run to the Grizzlies.  With the 3-1 lead Butler was able to shut down Dodge City in the bottom of the seventh for the 3-1 victory to start the day.

Despite wearing his first loss of the season, Luke Crabb (3-1) fanned 10 today after seven strong innings of work.  He gave up three runs on six hits after facing 25 batters.

Balsamo maintained his offensive ways, owning a 2-4 performance at the plate.  The freshman centerfielder also tabbed a stolen base.  Leno Ramirez had the RBI in the first inning and one walk later in the game.

Jason Nichols and Ricky Trammell also roped out singles while Hayden Hutchison reached twice on walks.

In game two, DC3 scored first in the third inning.

Hayden Simmons started things off with a single up the middle.  Balsamo then picked up two quick RBIs after knocking his first collegiate homerun outside of the right center fence to put the Conqs up 2-0.

Butler worked hard for one run in the seventh to attempt to close the gap a fraction.

Dodge kept the Grizzlies scoreless in the top of the eighth and headed into the bottom of the frame knowing they needed some insurance runs to garner the win.

Colbey Madewell walked to get the Conqs' first runner on the bases.  Ramirez then singled through the right side, allowing Madewell to reach third before Nichols walked to load the bases.

Jordan Doan advanced on the batter's box needing a hit to keep the Conqs alive and change the dynamic of the game.  Doan laced a hard hit grand slam over the left field fence to give DC3 the 6-2 lead.

The four-run lead would be the eventual final score, leaving both teams with a win on the day and looking to take the doubleheader tomorrow.

Layne Downing (2-0) put in quite the performance on the hill, fanning six and allowing only one run in five hits on the day.  The freshman did not give up his first hit until the middle of the fifth inning.

Doan led the team with four RBIs after his grand slam.  Ramirez finished 2-4 in the game and Balsamo owned two RBIs on his homerun.  Nichols, Josh Williams and Simmons also had hits in the game.

Madewell made an impact on the dirt after posting eight assists in the game.

The Conqs will return to Cavalier Field to finish their home series with Butler at 1:05 p.m.  Live stream will be available on www.ihigh.com/dc3 and updates will be posted at www.goconqs.com, on Facebook at Dodge City Community College Conquistador Athletics and on Twitter @goconqs.
