Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kansas: Dodge City baseball split the day with Seward County, winning the first game 1-0 before falling in game two, 3-2 in 10 innings.
Both teams had to face steady winds of 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 40 MPH, which factored in offensively, defensively and mentally today on the diamond.
The Conqs took game one in 7 innings after roughly an hour and a half playing. The short game was heavily due to strong pitching performances from both Dodge City and Seward County.
Luke Crabb (2-0) served up the complete game shutout win after fanning five and allowing only four hits in 25 batters.
Johnny Balsamo picked up two hits and an RBI in game one, while
Leno Ramirez also collected two hits.
Jason Nichols,
Ricky Trammell and
Hayden Simmons each snagged a hit apiece.
(*NOTE: With the schedule change, the game was played in a 'neutral' setting as Seward County remained the home team and Dodge City remained the away team).
With the score tied at 0's heading into the fifth inning, DC3 was intent on scoring. Simmons started the top of the frame with a bunt single to third base that he beat out.
Then with two outs, Simmons stole second and found himself in scoring position with Balsamo stepping up to the plate. Balsamo, batting a .467 on the season before the game, took the challenge and roped a single to left center scoring Simmons and putting the Conqs up 1-0.
Right-hander Crabb then closed the bottom of the frame with a groundout to first base (Trammell, 1B), a strike out looking and a strike out swinging to keep the Saints at bay.
Solid pitching closed the game quickly in the following innings, moving the day along into the second game with the Conqs up 1-0 on the day.
Game two started as quickly as the first with both teams struggling to gets hits through the wind. With the game winding down and still scoreless, things started to take a turn in the eighth inning.
With two outs and runners at first and third,
Colbey Madewell singles up the middle to put a run on the board for Dodge. The Conqs keep Seward scoreless in the eighth, but end up scoring in the ninth to extend the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10
th,
Johnny Balsamo reached on a fielder's chose and reached third on a well-placed sacrifice bunt from Madewell. Ramirez then worked into a fielder's choice himself that scored Balsamo, giving the Conqs the lead for the second time.
DC3 hit a wall in the bottom of the frame and the Saints took their opportunities. Seward tied it up early in the inning, and with no outs, scored again on a single to center field to end the game.
In game two, Balsamo again had two hits and Madewell and Ramirez each earned an RBI. Madewell, Ramirez, Nichols,
Jordan Doan, Trammell and
Frankie Valle each posted one hit.
Russell Mithlo started on the hill for DC3, going strong for seven innings, only giving up four hits. In 27 batter's faced, he struck out four and gave up no runs.
Andrew Riddell,
Anthony Bowmaker and
Austin Hammer closed out the game on the hump. Riddell threw the eighth and ninth, fanning three and giving up one run. Bowmaker started the tenth inning, giving up two runs (one unearned) on two hits and Hammer giving up one hit.
Ricky Trammell led the Conqs on the day with 22 putouts.
