Conq women's soccer's season comes to close in loss to Barton

DC3's Dominique Arzaga (6) battles for possession with Barton's Edith Scarlett Real on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The fourth-seeded Dodge City Community College women's soccer teams had its chances early in the first half while going with the wind, but couldn't take advantage of them while No. 5 Barton capitalized on its chances with the wind as the Conquistadors' season came to a close 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the KJCCC Tournament quarterfinals at Memorial Stadium.

DC3 (10-7), which defeated Barton 2-1 at home earlier this season and was 6-1 at Memorial Stadium entering the contest, had a trio of chances early in the opening half with shots on goal - but the Conqs weren't able to get the ball by Barton keeper Maria-Elena Garcia and the score remained scoreless in the first half (she finished with seven saves - five in the first half).

"Being in a playoff game and being that we already beat Barton, I think we were a little amped up in the first half," DC3 coach Tim Romanello said. "That didn't allow us to play within ourselves and take advantage of our chances."

However after outshooting Barton 7-4 in the first half, switching sides of the field put the wind in Barton's favor and the Cougars (9-6) would outshoot the Conqs 12-3 in the final 45 minutes and score all three of its goals.

Barton got on the board in the 54th minute on a goal by Jennifer Mendez and followed it up with goals by Samantha Thompson (65th minute) and Denise Cuenca (79th minute, assisted by Nineth Fuentes) to come away with the 3-0 victory.

While DC3 season came to a close, it did finished with the most regular season wins (10) since 2007 and the most conference victories (seven) since 2002.

"I'm proud of these girls and I told them that unfortunately only one team can move on," Romanello said. "I'd rather lose in regulation to a class act like Barton ... other then losing in penalties or overtime because that loss will stick with you. But this one is still going to hurt. But at the end of the day, look at what we have accomplished.

"There is a lot to be proud of."
