Women's Soccer Under New Direction Look for Strong Season

August 16, 2026

Coming off a six-win season, the Dodge City women's soccer program is under new guidance as Julio Guerrero took over the program in the spring of 2026 and will now coach his first season leading the Conquistadors in the fall.

While the Conqs had their most wins since the 2019 season last year, the season ended rough as they finished seventh in the KJCCC. They look to now change their fortune and take the program forward with a nearly revamped roster of 22 players, the most since the 2020-21 COVID season.

Only four players return from last year and will look to help lead the way for the Conqs after spending the spring with coach Guerrero. All four returners played in at least 14 of the team's 17 games last season. Layla Moreno Cantelejo is back in the midfield after netting a goal last season and playing in all 17 games with 13 starts. Amy Cappleman is back at defender after logging 16 games with six starts last season, while Lucia Bennett saw action in 16 games with 12 starts, netting a goal last year. Rinka Hayashi returns alongside her teammate and will play at forward/midfield; she played in 14 games last year with nine starts, netting one goal.

With only four returners, plenty of opportunities await the 18 newcomers to the roster, who will look to make an impact across the field at every position.

Three non-conference road games open the season for the Conqs, beginning at Trinidad State on Friday, August 21st at 3:00 pm, then taking on Rose State and #9 Trinity Valley on the road before their first home game. Tuesday, September 1st, the Conqs will take the pitch early at 11:00 am to play Mineral Area in their first home game of the season. KJCCC play will open on Wednesday, September 9th, when the Conqs host Butler.
