Volleyball Declaws Butler In Four Set Conference Victory

Dodge City volleyball moved to 2-0 in KJCCC action on Tuesday night as they declawed the Butler Grizzlies at home in four sets to improve to 8-1 on the season. 
 
The #19 Conquistadors picked up the four-set win, 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, over Butler in their first match after jumping into the Top 20 NJCAA Division I national rankings. 
 
Conqs opened the night strong, jumping out to an 8-3 lead in the first set, and continued to hold that separation throughout the first set, going on to win by their largest lead of the set, 25-18. Early in the second set, the Conqs appeared to take control again, leading 4-1, but Butler answered with three straight points to tie it at 4-4, and then the Conqs went on a 3-0 run and didn't give up the lead. Conqs got a pair of aces by Anete Celnova late to help take set two, 25-15. The third set was tight all the way through, and Butler took the lead at 18-17 and managed to hold off the Conqs as the Grizzlies grabbed it 25-23 to force a fourth set. In the fourth set, Butler took an 8-5 lead, and the Grizzlies maintained the lead until the Conqs tied the set at 18-18 and then took a 19-18 lead, going on to win the set 25-22 and take the match. 
 
Kayla Cantrill had a strong performance with 16 kills and five digs, while Sunni Skipps recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Celnova finished the match with 16 digs, along with three aces and eight kills. Chelsea Durbridge tallied 28 assists along with seven digs, while Rian Muntaner had 10 digs. 
 
Conqs step back into tournament play at the Magic City Invitational in Miami, Florida, over the weekend. They will face off against #1 Miami Dade, #2 Daytona State, #6 Florida Southwestern State, and Eastern Florida State.
