Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Home Against Hutchinson

Box Score Dodge City volleyball suffered its first setback of the season in conference play, dropping a tough five-set decision at home against Hutchinson. 
 
The Conquistadors fell 25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 21-25, 10-15 to Hutchinson at home, moving to 4-1 in KJCCC action and 15-5 overall. 
 
The night started tight over the first three points for each team, but an early 3-0 run put the Conqs up 6-3 in the first set, and they used the cushion to build to a 16-9 advantage and ultimately held off Hutchinson to win the first set 25-22. Set two saw Hutchinson take the lead at 7-6 and never get it back as they expanded it to eight at 23-15 and the Blue Dragons took the second set 25-18. The Conqs responded in big fashion in the third set, going up 10-9 and then on an 11-3 run with four consecutive aces from Sunni Skipps during the stretch to win 25-15. The fourth set saw the Conqs fall behind early and couldn't recover as Hutchinson led 18-8 on their way to a 25-21 set win. In the fifth set, it was tied 3-3 early, but Hutchinson went on a 3-0 run to take a 6-3 lead, and the Conqs couldn't recover as the Blue Dragons took the set 15-11 to earn the win. 
 
In the loss, Kayla Cantrill led the Conqs with 14 kills and had 11 digs for a double-double, while Skipps also had a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, adding four aces. Anete Celnova chipped in a double-double of her own with 11 kills and 12 digs, adding four block assists. Chelsea Durbridge tallied 38 assists, along with eight digs, three block assists, and two kills. 
 
The Conqs are back in action to wrap up the week with a road trip to Liberal, Kansas, to take on Seward County on Saturday, September 19th at 2:00 pm.
