Baseball Plays to a Split at Home Against Garden City

Dodge City baseball hosted rival Garden City as the two teams vie for sole possession of sixth place in the KJCCC, and at the end of the doubleheader, they remained tied for sixth after the split. 
 
The Conquistadors earned an 8-5 win in game one but dropped a tough 6-3 contest in game two. Conqs moved to 21-26 on the season and 10-16 in KJCCC action. 
 
The Conqs will look for a strong finish to the series against Garden City on the road on Saturday, April 25th, with a twinbill scheduled for a 1:00 pm start. 
 
Game 1 – Won 8-5 vs Garden City 
The day started a bit rough for the Conqs as Garden City sent seven to the plate in the first inning and, behind three hits and a tough error by the Conqs, Garden City scored two runs to grab the initial lead. In the bottom of the third, the Conqs nearly batted around, scoring three. Bynum Martinez started things with a double and scored on an RBI double by Angel Vazquez, and then Ben Longoria belted a two-run homer to push the Conqs in front at 3-2. The top of the fourth saw Garden City counter with a pair of runs to lift them back in front at 4-3. The lead for Garden City was short-lived as the Conqs plated three more runs in the bottom of the fourth with three straight doubles to open the inning, leading the charge. 
 
Leading 6-4 the Conqs saw Garden City push back again, but this time the Conqs held them to just one run in the fifth to keep the lead. An RBI double by Cameron Stukenborg and an RBI single by Jordi Guerrero in the bottom of the fifth gave the Conqs some insurance runs. Cameron Stewart put the finishing touches on the game over the next two innings, holding Garden City off the board to throw his second consecutive complete game as the Conqs won 8-5. 
 
Stewart tossed all seven innings to earn the win, giving up five runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out two. The win for 
 
Offensively, the Conqs pounded out 14 hits, led by Martinez, who was 3-4 with two runs scored, two doubles, and two RBI in the leadoff spot. Longoria added a 2-3 game with three RBI, a home run, and a run scored. Vazquez went 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, while Guerrero was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Hunter Morgan was 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. 
 
Game 2 – Lost 6-3 vs Garden City 
The second game of the day saw the Conqs grab the initial lead with an RBI single from Longoria in the bottom of the first. A leadoff walk in the top of the third was taken advantage of by Garden City as they tied the game at 1-1. Conqs answered in the bottom of the third with back-to-back triples by Martinez and Guerrero to open the inning and then added another run to lead 3-1. A two-run homer in the fourth pulled Garden City even again, and the game remained 3-3 until the eighth. The Conqs left the bases loaded in the fifth, and Garden City stranded two in the seventh before Garden City took their first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the eighth. Conqs saw Garden City tack on another run in the top of the ninth and then were set down in order in the bottom of the ninth, falling 6-3. 
 
Despite having 12 hits, the Conqs managed just three runs in the loss. Longoria continued to have a spectacular season, going 4-4 with an RBI. Vazquez added a 2-4 outing with a run scored and an RBI, while Morgan was 2-4. 
 
Michael Bizier tossed a solid 4.1 innings as the starter, while Aydin Ruiz threw 2.1 scoreless innings and Dariel Luna saw action.
