Box Score 2 Dodge City softball saw its win streak come to a halt as they were unable to work past Cowley on the road in non-conference action, falling 5-3 and 14-8.
The Conquistadors moved to 14-8 on the season with the pair of losses and saw their eight-game win streak come to an end.
It's back to conference play on Wednesday, March 11th, at home as they take on Fort Hays Tech Northwest starting at 1:00pm. The Conqs are also scheduled for a home doubleheader versus Dakota College at Bottineau on Thursday, March 12th, and then a doubleheader with Pratt on Saturday, March 14th.
Game 1 – Lost 5-3 at Cowley
Riding a hot streak offensively, the Conqs looked like it would continue as they started the game strong against Cowley with a single and then a double, followed by a sacrifice fly from
Jordyn Boxberger to drive in the first run of the game. An RBI single by
Cadie McCracken and then a Cowley error helped the Conqs score two in the second to lead 3-0. Cowley scratched their first run of the game across in the bottom of the second and then another in the third. Conqs continued to hold off Cowley throughout the game until the bottom of the sixth when the Tigers of Cowley tied the game at 3-3. After a one-two-three top of the seventh, the Conqs looked to keep Cowley off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh and push the game to extra innings. After a strikeout to open the bottom of the seventh, Cowley drew a walk and then laid down a sacrifice bunt before blasting a two-run home run to steal game one 5-3.
In the loss,
Riley Moore was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while
Loren Sweat was 2-3 with a double.
Sophie Faidley added a 2-3 game with a run scored.
Avery McCloskey tossed six innings of action, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out three.
Game 2 – Lost 14-8 at Cowley
The second game of the day was an uphill battle for the Conqs from the start, falling behind in the first inning as Cowley plated four in the first. Conqs answered with a two RBI double by
Dezarae Schmidt with two outs in the second to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. Tigers pounced on another opportunity in the third, scoring five to lead 9-2. In the fifth, the Conqs tallied two, but Cowley countered with two of their own, making it 11-4 after the fifth inning. Conqs continued to battle in the sixth as McCloskey belted a three-run home run to draw the Conqs within four at 11-7. However, Cowley answered again, hitting their own three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff homer by Faidley to open the seventh pushed one more run across for the Conqs, but ultimately would be the last run of the day for the Conqs as they fell 14-8.
Four Conqs had a multi-hit game in the loss as McCloskey was 2-4 with three RBI, a home run, a double, and two runs scored, while McCracken went 2-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Boxberger added a 2-3 game with an RBI and a walk.
Harley Shoaf was 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Karli George and
Shyann Clark both saw action in the circle.
