Baseball Splits Road Doubleheader With #4 Cloud County

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Dodge City baseball wrapped up their third KJCCC series of the season, getting a road split against #4 Cloud County, winning game one of the day 11-10, and falling 28-6 in the series finale. 
 
The split on the day moves the Conquistadors to 13-20 overall and 2-10 in Jayhawk Conference play. The win in game one of the doubleheader snapped a seven-game losing streak to Cloud County and a six-game losing streak on the season. 
 
Conference play continues next week for the Conqs as they will square off with Barton first in Great Bend on Thursday, April 2nd, and then at home on Saturday, April 4th.
 
Game 1 – Won 11-10 at #4 Cloud County
The Conqs opened the day in strong fashion with a single and then double, and a groundout by Angel Vazquez drove in a run, while Ben Longoria followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 before Cloud County had a chance to bat. Cloud County countered in the bottom of the first plating three runs to grab a 3-2 advantage. Cameron Stukenborg belted a solo home run to lead off the top of the second and tie the game at 3-3, but were unable to take the lead, leaving the bases loaded in the second. The third saw Cloud County regain the lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning, the Conqs used the long ball to draw even again in the fourth as Bynum Martinez belted a solo home run. Once again, Cloud County answered as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, making it 7-4. 
 
In the top of the fifth after a groundout to open the inning, the Conqs worked the bases loaded with a pair of singles and a walk, and Stukenborg then blasted a grand slam to push the Conqs in front at 8-7. The bottom of the sixth saw Cloud County tie the game at 8-8, going into the seventh inning. After a leadoff walk to open the seventh, Longoria smacked a two-run homer as the Conqs grabbed the lead back, and Jordi Guerrerro added an RBI single to make it 11-8. Needing three outs to secure the road win, the Conqs gave up a solo home run to open the bottom of the seventh, then a double, but recorded an out on a sacrifice bunt. Cloud County continued to battle, getting an RBI single to pull with one run, after another single and having the tying and winning runs on the bases, the Conqs induced a ground ball for a double play to cap the game and earn the 11-10 victory. 
 
Conqs had 13 hits in the win, led by Stukenborg, who was 3-4 with five RBI, two home runs, and two runs scored. Lex Lummus added a 2-4 game, while Longoria was 2-3 with two runs scored, a home run, and three RBI. 
 
On the mound, Lane French, Aydin Ruiz, Dariel Luna, and Stukenborg all had solid outings to keep the Conqs in the contest. Stukenborg picked up the save, tossing the final inning. 
 
Game 2 – Lost 28-6 at #4 Cloud County
The series finale was controlled by the Conqs' opposition as Cloud County set the tone early, scoring three runs in the first inning and at least one run in the other five innings they would bat in for the game. After Cloud County tallied 12 runs in the second inning, the Conqs trailed 15-0 before the Conqs got on the board with a Longoria RBI single. Conqs tallied another run in the fifth on a Guerrero solo home run and then three more in the sixth off a Preston Harrison three-run homer, while the Conqs' final run of the game came off the bat of Harrison with an RBI single in the seventh. Conqs ultimately could not stay with Cloud County, falling 28-6 in seven innings. 
 
Conqs were led in the loss at the plate by Guerrero, who was 2-3 with a run scored, a home run, and an RBI, while Harrison went 2-4 with four RBI, a run scored, and a home run.
