Box Score 4 After a stretch of games at home, the Dodge City baseball team hit the road again in early-season action, traveling to Hobbs, New Mexico, to take on #20 New Mexico.
While the Conquistadors were able to produce some runs, they were unable to wrangle in the New Mexico bats, dropping all four games in the series. The Conqs' late comeback in game one fell short, falling 10-9, and day one was capped by a 15-5 game. Day two saw the Conqs drop a tough game, three of the series, as New Mexico won in walkoff fashion, 10-9. The Conqs held a lead in the series finale but ultimately were unable to capture the win, falling 16-13.
The Conqs move to 9-8 on the season and will be back in action on March 6th-7th in a series with Otero, as the Conqs will play in La Junta, Colorado, on Friday, March 6th, and then host Otero on Saturday, March 7th.
Game 1 – Lost 10-9 at New Mexico
In a weekend that featured a multitude of runs, it was New Mexico who scored first, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning of game one. The top of the second saw the Conq bats come alive as they used four singles and a New Mexico error to score four runs, taking the lead. New Mexico scratched a run across in the second and another in the third before tying the game at 4-4 in the fourth on a home run. The top of the fifth with two-outs
Preston Harrison belted a ball to deep center field and turned on the jets, racing around the bases for an inside the park home run, giving the Conqs a 5-4 lead. The Conqs lead disappeared in the bottom of the sixth using four hits, a Dodge City error, and a hit batsman to score six runs and lead 10-5. The Conqs didn't go away quietly as they were down to their final three outs and pushed back in the top of the seventh.
Ben Longoria started the scoring in the seventh, blasting a solo home run, then
Nic Cipolla brought in a run on an RBI single, making it 10-7.
Jordi Guerrero belted a two-run homer to bring the Conqs within one run, but scoring stopped there as the Conqs comeback fell just short at 10-9.
Conqs had 15 hits in the loss, led by a 3-4 game from Longoria, who had a run scored, an RBI, a double, and a home run.
Hunter Morgan,
Will Soto, Guerrero, and
Angel Vazquez each had a two-hit game.
Game 2 – Lost 15-5 at New Mexico
The first day of competition between the Conqs and New Mexico wrapped up with a six-inning contest as the Conqs struggled to stay with New Mexico. Conqs grabbed the early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning, and New Mexico answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first to take control. New Mexico extended its lead with three runs in the second and four more in the third to lead 14-2. In the fifth Harrison blasted a three-run homer to cut into the Conqs deficit but in the bottom of the sixth New Mexico tallied another run to end the game at 15-5.
Longoria and Morgan led the Conqs' offense, each recording two hits. It was a 2-4 game with two runs scored and a double for Longoria, while Morgan went 22-4 with two runs scored.
Game 3 – Lost 10-9 at New Mexico
Looking to bounce back from day one, the Conqs were competitive all day, but New Mexico again had just a bit more offense to take the games. Game three of the series saw the Conqs start the scoring again with two runs in the first inning. New Mexico tallied a run in the bottom of the first, but the Conqs extended their lead in the third and fourth innings with two runs in each frame and then tallied three more in the fifth, while New Mexico during the same time managed just two runs. Leading 9-3, the Conqs saw New Mexico tally two in the sixth and then plate five in the seventh inning as they completed a comeback in walkoff fashion with the Conqs falling 10-9.
In the loss,
Nic Cipolla was 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Longoria was 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Vazquez added a 2-2 game with two runs scored, a double, and a walk.
Game 4 – Lost 16-13 at New Mexico
The Conqs continued to fight in the series finale and once again held an early lead as Guerrero blasted a two-run home run in the second, and nearly every half inning after that featured the latest one run scored in the contest. After New Mexico plated a run in the bottom of the second, the Conqs got an RBI double from Harrison and a two-run homer by Cipolla to score three in the third. New Mexico countered with three of their own in the bottom of the third to make it 5-4. Both teams tallied a run in the fourth, and the Conqs notched another in the fifth to lead 7-5. Two more runs in the sixth gave the Conqs a 9-5 lead, but New Mexico grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth with six runs, going up 11-9. Conqs tried to push back but fell short, dropping the series finale 16-13.
Cameron Stukenborg, Guerrero, Soto, and
Jonah Andrade each recorded three hits in the loss. Stukenborg was 3-5 with three runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a triple, while Guerrero went 3-5 with three RBI, a walk, and two home runs. Soto added a 3-4 game with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk, and Andrade was 3-5 with two RBI and a double.
